I'm not positive on this, but I believe that the 6x9's will fit in a PT Convertible, but if you've got the hardtop, you're limited to 6x8's.
Not sure if a trim ring would do anything to help. Only thing I would suggest aside from taking it somewhere is to pull the pillars off and pick up a cheap 6x9 and see how it fits..

All speakers are different. There is no real "standard" 6"x9" size. Everything is dependent upon the speaker manufacturer and how they set up their speaker (flange, mounting, depth, etc). Note that a Boston Acoustics 6.75" speaker is too small to fit in the doors without a spacer, and a Pioneer 6.5" is too big. Go figure.
