My issue was I put in really nice speakers but the headunit could not match the quality. So when I installed the JVC headunit it supplied more power to the speakers.

My system has cost me = 400$ in replacement speakers / 550$ for replacement Headunit, wire harness, and mount
Fortunately my headunit provides enough power to push my speakers (DVD receiver with built-in MOSFET amplifier (20 watts RMS CEA-2006/50 peak x 4 channels)

Aftermarket Headunit with stock speakers = Better sound thats adjustable but will not provide the range aftermarket speakers will
Aftermarket speakers with stock headunit = Quality sound with lower a power output.
Aftermarket speakers with stock headunit w/ amp = Quality sound with full potential of speaker but still has stock sound adjustments

Aftermarket Headunit and speakers = Quality sound that is adjustable but may require a amp to provide full potential
Aftermarket Headunit speakers and amp = Everything you need but will cost you $$$

That is my opinion atleast. I just believe one thing over the other doesn't provide everything you need.

You're pretty much right. One can do a pretty decent system on a budget if you shop around and wait for good deals though. A couple years ago in my Neon, I had top-of-the-line Infinity speakers (6x9's in the rear deck, components in the front doors and dash). I bought an old Alpine amp from the early 90's with much better sound quality (notice I said quality, not power) than most crap today and bought a decent deck with a lot of available adjustment. I bought everything from eBay and had under $500 into the whole setup. It sounded amazing. There was no distortion right to the limit and there was great sound quality from low's, mid's and high's. The 6x9's added just the right amount of low's without needing a sub (in my opinion anyway).

Ya i'm MAINLY looking for the mids/highs that just aren't there on the stock setup. I dont need a competition system or anything, just something thats more clear and easier for my deaf ears to hear.

Tweeters will definately help in the high department hence why I went with components.

Im not looking for competition level either I just wanted quality sound. I spent the money on good products and I checked all the reviews I could on them.

I plan on getting an amp but just for the woofers I have. However with the tuning available I was able to create with my current setup it is producing enough bass to make me happy.

You can find anything cheap and I paid alot less than what the major online retailers were trying to offer them for.

I have a system in the works. They key to a good system at a very low price is Downtown L.A- some of the best prices and gear i've seen.

Yup you can hunt around and do a low budget quality system.

I just happened to go the all new route

Everything is new in Downtown. That is where every shop in the southbay usually stocks up on gear.
