Default Trying to diagnose a 2006 radio problem

Hi all -

the factory (REF) radio on our 2006 PT started acting up a few weeks ago. When we start the car, one of three things happens:

1. the radio acts normal.

2. the radio is off, and won't turn on.

3. the CD player sounds like it's turning, but the radio isn't on and won't come on.

The lights on the panel are always fine, and there doesn't seem to be any pattern (e.g. temperature) discernible.

After reading through the forum, I am assuming that the fault is in the radio unit itself, and I'm planning to just replace it. But I've seen reference to PCM fixes and ignition cylinder fixes, so before I did I wanted to at least poll the experts here to see if perhaps the symptoms indicate another course of action.

Also, we have factory Sirius - any words of wisdom or things to look out for when pulling and replacing the radio?

Thanks!

JAC

My 2006 is doing the exact same thing. I'm assuming it is within the radio as well and unless it is a simple fix I'll just replace the radio.

I have a similar problem: The radio works fine, and I can hear the the cd changer moving, but I it won't play cd's or eject them. Checked all the fuses, but no help.

The problem started after I replaced the battery.

Anybody?

Today i replace a 2006 pt cruiser radio, ( with a rebuild radio ) for a local dealer
they say everything was ok driving the car from the auction to their lot
it sat there for 3 weeks before they sold the car, and radio was working fine
but one day the battery die so it was replace and bingo
the radio is going crazy sometimes it works some other days is off and nothing works only lights flashing,
the problem was inside the radio no bad wiring no bad fuses,
this was a touring with Sirius

Dont replace your battery

Under the hood look in the fuse box. Pull the IOD fuse out for a minute and then re-install it.

That IOD fuse is Ignition-off draw, there was nothing wrong with that or any fuse and it didn't show the bad fuse message in the cluster
it was just a bad radio and it was replace
thank you

Yeah i knew what that is but the wifes PT did the same thing. I removed the IOD then replaced it. Radio has worked for months now without any issue. Dont know how or why but its like it reset soemthing.

Just thought i would pass along as its quick and free if it works for others to.

that fuse keeps power when the ignition is off, this will keep power to the computer, cluster, radio memory, keyless entry
is like the memory wire if is bad you lose the radio, but this is not the radio power fuse

A much-belated thanks for the help. Unfortunately, it didn't help for me.

My 03' had the same problem,

Don't know if it's the same on your 06' but I resolved it by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, removing the radio, then disconnecting the pci buss wire on pin 14 (violet w/yellow) then reconnecting battery. I believe it has something to do with the factory alarm system. I don't have to worry about an alarm where I live at, It solved my issues and have not had a problem since. You can try it and see if it works, if it does not you can always reconnect it.

Good luck! Cheers!
