Default CD-R/CD-RW in stock 6-disc changer ?

Will the stock 6-disc in-dash changer play either one of these, or just one, and if it is just one of them, which one? I know in some head units that they will play one and not the other, although I have no idea why.
I just wanna know before I waste a disc, and I couldn't find anything in the owner's manual.

CD-Rs do play. We've made many and they play great.

CD R's will play but not RW's.

That's what I figured.Anyone know why, and why it isn't listed in the manual?

You're at the whim of the technology mate. DC wants to put out product with increased functionality without taking a shot to their profit. In other words it's cheaper for them to just use cd drives that can play a standard closed session CD/R rather than a higher end drive that could read CD/RW. I haven't tried it but I'd also bet it won't play MP3s. Most car companies are happy to leave that to the aftermarket head unit manufacturers just because it's gentler on their bottom line.

Give it a few years and they'll be using higher end drives.

same deal with DVD + and DVD - . Theres no standard, only certain machines will play either dvd + or dvd -. Not sure about the cd-rw's I dont know why they wouldnt work, its a different format, well kinda. But my cd will play sound files burned as a straight mp3 or .wav file. try burning a test song on a cd-rw in both formats and see if one may work

Aye it's a formatting problem. A CD-R (once it's closed/finalized) acts just like regular CD. A CD-RW is essentially a big floppy disk. Your cd drive has to be able to work within whatever OS the cd-rw was created in. All CD-R's should work in our factory players but it still can vary. The drive in my living room stereo has no trouble with CD-R but the boombox in my gym chokes on them without fail. Same manufacturer but the boombox is about five years old.

Jax - So you've played a cd-r with mp3s in the factory unit? Just curious as it'd be really nice to just keep everything in MP3 rather than converting to wav and burning a standard size cd.

There is also an issue with laser power in reading cdrw's. The substrate used in CDRW requires more laser power to read the pits(data) properly. The CDRW even with a closed session recorded on it still will not play on some of the older players. CDRW compatable players have a self adjusting laser supply in order to read the data on a cdrw. Most of the older units just do not get enough laser beam back through the focus lens to get a good focus calibration. I have even had some CDRs (very cheap brands) that exhibit the same kinds of issues and will not play on all players, but play fine on the drive that they were recorded on.....

Beacon, yeah i'm pretty sure some of my cd's that i played in the factory unit were in mp3 format. They play in my sony head unit no problem. i think its just older cd players have issues with playing mp3 formats.
