RE: 2002 limited edition:
Can anyone tell me if you can make the factory installed Alarm system self-arming (passive)??? This is what is needed to qualify for a discount on your insurance. Thanks for your time. Scott |

Mine turns on anytime I lock the doors. The red LED on the dash is on. I have never fully understood what good the system does, as nothing, including shaking the car sets it off. Just as well I guess, 'cause I hate those things going off in the parking lot, and my insurance Co. gave me the discount just because it is listed as an option on the car.

The PT's alarm is a passive system. It automatically arms when the doors lock. It has no shock sensor so shaking the vehicle will not trigger the alarm. If the doors are opened without first being unlocked via the remote(by breaking a window for instance), the alarm will sound. This is simply a honking horn and flashing lights, there is no siren.

Has anyone ever installed a LoJack in their car, The type that if your car is stolen it can be tracked? Also is there an ignition kill option you can add to the stock alarm system? I've grown so attached to my PT, the thought of losing her makes me cringe.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

My factory alarm, the most basic model, makes noise when set off but also has starter interlock so it won't start. Check... Yours may have it too.
The alarm is delayed set by the doors shutting. They don't have to be locked. Read your owners manual, you can probably alter the delay time if you wish. Edited by - 2sb on 03/16/2003 22:46:08 Edited by - 2sb on 03/16/2003 23:01:07 |

According the manual in the 2003's, you must remove the keys from the iginition switch, lock the door using either the door key, power door lock switch, or the Keyless Entry Transmitter and close all doors. The indicator light in the instrument panel will flash rapidly for 16 seconds. During this time, if a door is opened, the ignition switch in turned on, or the power door locks are unloced the system with disarm. After 16 seconds, the system is fully armed. No method is listed to alter the 16 second timing.

Mine's a 2002 without power door locks. On it, the wire from the door that effects the dome light also does the alarm. There's a sensor in the door latch which says whether the latch tangs are open or closed. The body computer assumes that if they're closed, they're around the striker plate and the door is shut. Try this. Close the tang with the door open and see if it effects the dome light/security.BE SURE TO REOPEN LATCH BEFORE SHUTTING DOOR. The owners manual for the system offered a choice of delays. I believe it was either 3 or 5 minutes.
