Default Negative battery terminal disconnect necessary?

Is disconnecting the negative battery terminal necessary for replacement of radio? It mentions this in the ptdiy.net guide.

KingKole02, I think every repair in the service manual recommends disconnecting the negative battery cable.

From the service manual:

Radio
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
(2) Remove instrument panel center bezel.
(3) Remove mounting fasteners and remove radio
from instrument panel
(4) Disconnect wire harness connector from radio.
CAUTION: Pulling the antenna cable straight out of
the radio without pulling on the locking antenna
connector could damage the cable or radio.
(5) Disconnect the antenna cable by pulling the locking
antenna connector away from the radio (Fig. 7).

man, disconnect that terminal
thats rule #1 when you're doin electrical work, trust me, i was in a hurry hooking up a few wires and bumped a bare one against another and didnt have that terminal disconnected. ZAP! there went my odometer, interior lights, pwr locks.

luckily i only blew out the IOD fuse, but you dont wanna end up blowing the airbag or frying the OBD.

As mentioned, the manual says to disconnect battery for all electrical work, because that's safest. I would think if you pull the fuse to the radio while you're working on it, you should be fine.

To be safe, disconnect the battery cable. Pulling the fuse disconnects most of the current to the radio, but what about the lights in the radio? They're from the interior lighting citcuits. The clock portion has a BATT feed instead of an IGN feed.[:I]

Disconnecting the battery for how long?

If I need to disconnect for more than an hour or two hours, what could result from it?

When I plan to put in this new deck this week end. Im going to need to cut and splice so wires, I believe, and need to know the results of disconnecting the battery for a period of time.

I was hoping that the new deck wire harness would be the same as the old. But in most cases its not. Do they make on that will just plug in to the new one then into the radio, probably not, but maybe some day.

You will probably lose your radio settings and your clock setting, I don't believe it will affect anything else.
