What is funny is that the power watts is so low comparing today yet those unit had true output. 1 watt of clean power would *"blow the cloths off any woman!"

*line from the remake movie The Italian Job.

Vacuum tube amps are generally regarded to have better and warmer sound.

Volume isn't everything.

Yep. And they are great for guitar amps. A modern guitar amp just isn't even the same thing as an old tube amp. But for car audio, I'm not sure what a tube amp would accomplish other than I lot of heat and a heavy orange glow from under the dash.

The issue is that while the tube amps are great for guitars, they are not the best for amplification of other things. For an auditorium or other venue, I like a solid state main amp. And then the each guitar can be run thru it's own tube-driven pre-amp. And I like the sax run through a box or series of boxes offering compression, harmonization and reverb. I have a programmable multifunction peddle for this. But since I usually play in church, there's a not as much opportunity to setup for heavy guitars and electrically projected sax.

In a car audio situation, you are just trying to produce a true representation of a recording. Any benefit from a tube amp will already be on the recording and is already balanced. And a quality solid state amp is always going to be the best option for reproducing the recorded sound. But that glow and that tube amp smell does bring back some nostalgic memories.

It takes me back to the days of the reverb unit. For less than $20.00, hooked up to your AM radio (vacuuum tubes) with rear speakers, it could put out the sound of a concert hall. Or at least we thought so. The line was, "it really sounds much better in the back seat". But then that really dates me as a geezer. Memories of the 50's. ptprice

Yep,

And here is the PERFECT way to do it. The dial-operated FM stereo tuner that Pioneer used with this under dash 8-track unit is one of best they ever made.

I can think of quite a few things that sounded or looked better in the back seat. You old geezers like me will know exactly what I'm talking about!
