Question Backup camera on 1st-gen?

No CAN-BUS, so my radio doesn't automatically know what gear I am in.
There is an extra sensor wire for the reverse gear... I just have to find the most convenient place to tap it in. Anyone done one of these recently?

Are you going with an after market unit or something OEM from Mopar?

On the after market systems, you can usually just tap into the reverse light circuit.

'Tis an AfterMarket!

And I'm just wondering where to tap into the backup circuit... is there a handy spot somewhere in the dash, or am I better off running a wire from the console (assuming there is a terminal right on the shifter somewhere...)

I too am looking for that backup light wire near the shifter or under the dash. I need to connect it to my aftermarket radio with a 7" screen for the backup screen feature. Any help will surely be appreciated.
Thanks,s
Bob

Don't know about the Gen1's, but may be similar, but on the Gen2's just above the foot rest on the left side, there is a large wire connector that unplugs that goes to the wiring harness to the rear of the vehicle. You can go to AutoZone website and view a free copy of the wiring diagram for your vehicle to get the wire color code for the reverse circuit, then you should be able to tap into it at that connector.

I put one in my 2001, used the reverse light to power the camera and ran a hot from the head unit wire harness all the way back to the reverse light, I pigtailed a wire off the positive side and soldered the 3 wires together and pulled the clamp off the and inserted the wire into the harness and attached the clip. Whole thing took about an hour to do.

The way I ran the wire (Both reverse activate and RCA Video cable) out was through the back of the head unit, under the dash, followed the trim to the rubber grommet the on the floor behind the passenger seat, then followed the frame to the reverse light and zip tied it along the way.

here is the working unit (Also added Apple TV 2)
