Default New radio for Gen 1 Auto

So I live in the UK and all the websites here say I can only have a single DIN radio, however, I see other cars with a double DIN with no alterations made.

I got to get a new one as my current one is the factory one with a tape player.

Any suggestions?

I preferably would like one that does not involve a single DIN radio and the rest is some blank plate to cover the rest of the hole.

Actually, a double DIN aftermarket stereo unit requires quite a bit of alteration. You will likely have to increase the size of the hole in the metal bracket within the dash. And you will have to make a custom bezel (face plate). The single DIN (with adapter plate to cover the rest of the hole) is much easier.

Here's the bezel you would need for the double DIN:

Another option is to purchase one of the aftermarket stereos made to fit the original 1.5 DIN oval hole. These appear to be overpriced for what you actually get. Here's a link to an example. They all come from Asia and should be available for UK shipping. You may need to check eBay in the UK.

US SHIP Autoradio DVD GPS Navigation Stereo Headunit for Dodge RAM Jeep Wrangler | eBay

Also, there is a slight difference in stereos for the US and EU markets. US radio stations are on the odd-numbered decimals, such as 94.1 FM. But in Europe, some are on the even-numbered decimals like 94.2 FM. And many US stereo units move frequencies 2 decimals at a time. So they will not tune to the odd-numbered frequencies. I don't know which do this and which don't. I believe the OEM Chrysler units from the US do only tune to the odd frequencies. I have no idea about the aftermarket units. Again, chose one from your own market if you are going aftermarket.

Thanks Handy_Cruiser for the reply. Your tips and advice are always appreciated.

That second after market one 1.5 DIN is that the size I need to look at to fit my original space? I would prefer one to fit the space exactly.

My father has a plate on his to fill the gap and I just do not like it.

I am always wary about the European PT Cruisers because I haven't had a chance to play with one. But if your dash and factory stereo setup is like the ones in the US 2001 thru 2005 PT Cruisers, then yes, that aftermarket stereo unit with the oval face is the one for a direct fit in your PT. But since you have a 2001 model, you may also need a wiring harness plug adapter. I would wager that this stereo comes with a 2002 and up harness plug.

So, problems already.

I bought a single DIN radio. Reason being, a double would require a whole bezel workup. and singe tends to be the standard here.

However, obviously the gap from the 1.5 DIN is too big for the single.

Any ideas on where to look or what to buy to fill the gaps. Even the cage for the single DIN is too small for the gap. Won't even reach side to side.

Also, the cable. Any idea on conversion cables for the scarts?

I am determined to get this new radio in.

You just need the right Single DIN adapter kit:

Here's a link to one.

And there's a bunch more on eBay.uk. Just make sure to get one for a 1st Gen PT.

And here's some photos of one in a PT.

Wow, thank you once again for all this.

I am feeling very optimistic about it all.

What do I do about the cage though? The 1.5 DIN standard radio appears to be much wider. the cage for my single DIN won't even reach the sides of the gaps so worried the radio won't be fixed into place.

The cage should slide through the face of the adapter plate. However, if you need side support for your stereo, some of the adapter kits come with them:

All installed. Thank you. Ignore the mess on the centre console. A new one is coming. I opted for the single DIN radio with touchscreen beats having a cassette one
