Default Stereo can't see led, red lines

My friends pt just got a new issue. The stereo works, but the lcd does not work. It "powers up" but I only see some red lines lit up.

I read about bad ground in the steering wheel. Also something with the key slot. But it seems to be getting power, but lcd is busted.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'd say the screen is bad...a bad ground wouldn't cause that problem.

Here the pinouts. You could have a bad ground (11 & 22), bad battery positive , bad acc. positive (2) or bad panel light connection.

And if you think it's the ground, just hook a wire to the stereo chassis and ground it to the negative terminal on the battery to see what it does.

Good point. My advice was based on the OP's friend having a 1st Gen PT with an oval face stereo unit. If it's a 2nd Gen PT, the pinouts will be different. We need more information.

On the 1st Gen stereos, the LED will sometime go a little crazy or not work at all if all three power wires (bat., acc. & panel light.) are not connected or if the ground is bad. And course, the LED screen or other electronics could just be faulty too.

I have a dumb question.. How do you get red lines in a blue display? ... Or are some not blue?

I see I'm not the only one that took the OP as an after market unit.

Some of the oval face Chrysler stereo units have a red screen. These were more common in the Sebring hard tops. But one could end up a PT very easily. There's lots of them at the salvage yards.

But yes, we definitely don't have enough to go on here.
