Help me choose a system for my convert...

I have a base model convert (love it) and am looking to upgrade the audio... I don't want to break the bank, but I'm looking for a decent head unit that will play MP3's and some sort of an auxilliary input for my ipod (is that difficult/ will installation cost more?) I'd also like a simple subwoofer for bass, and space is very limited. I'm not an audiophile at all and generally listen to a lot of blues and jazz- but the base system (with the ridiculous tape deck) just won't cut it... I don't really want to upgrade the speakers right now, but would like the option to do it later... would I need an amp? What head units/ subwoofers would you guys recommend, and what's it gonna cost me to get pretty good sound in the car? Should I go to Best Buy or to a car sudio shop... I'm in LA...

I don't know if the conv. is the same as the regular one, but I am selling my custom made 12" space saver sub box. check the link below. Let know what you think. Go with a pioneer head just got the DEH-P960mp and it is awesome sounding.
