Default Factory Subwoofer (disappointed) comments

Darn it!!! I wanted to post a comment but I was called away for a minute and the thread was closed.

A couple of points I'd like to express, being somewhat of an audiophile from waaaaayyy back.

First, a normal sub-woofer is only supposed to 'fill in the rest of the bass' so to speak. In other words, reproduce the bass that the stock speakers are unable to reproduce. (Hence: sub - woofer.) You are supposed to adjust the output so that you just notice it. That way it reinforces and extends the existing bass range. If the recording has the bass in it, you will hear it.

Second, (in my opinion - and we all know what opinions are worth) the stock speakers in both Gen 1's and Gen 2's are matched to those year's particular style stereos, and they both sound fine, depending on what you are looking for.

Now, if you are looking for window-rattling, high dB, ear-blasting bass, well, that stock sub-woofer was just not designed to do that.

I have test-driven a Gen 1 Cruiser with the stock sub-woofer and I could definitely tell it was doing it's intended job. In fact I would have bought that Cruiser for the sound (and the other added amenities it had) if it wasn't all rusted out underneath, with a dent in the hood, and made loud clunking noises when going over bumps in the road. It sounded awesome (to me).

Submitted respectfully.

+1

That's exactly my experience with these as well. But as musicians, (mostly acoustic musicians at that), we both likely prefer balance over extreme dynamics. I believe dynamics in music are sort of like spice in food. A little is great. But some folks find they want more and more until the food is tasteless to them unless hot enough to burn the mouths of many others.

Playing our own acoustic music may help keep us "centered" as far as dynamic balance goes. But like good looks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And I figure musical dynamics are too. So to each his own as long as no one's ears get damaged.

There is only maybe a few members on this forum that have designed complete sound systems for cars(on a professional level).

What you (wingman55 ) posted is pretty commonly said among maybe 97% of everyone that talks about sound quality in a car or truck.

I have gone to the trouble of designing systems for customers and having them leave my shop with a very good system that was deigned using pink noise analysis and a week or so when I see them again they have changed all the frequencies to what they think sound s good for them. Generally it is so far from real music ..I just say nothing and like hearing them tell me how much they love they system.

My own personal sound system in my 82 Camaro had 36 speakers to create as close to a flat response possible with 2 people in the car measure the air space and volume of the interior and running it through a program to design sound equipment. Although stereo contest were just starting in the early 80's I never entered my Camaro but I think got one of the best complements one could get from a singer of a band. He sat in my car and I played the song *he often sung and he just said "Friken KOOL! * Eric Burdon

I never said that the sub woofer kit was bad only that it lack a lot. Plastic case that expands under speaker movement expediently as the sound pressure increases. A very small (tiny) amp that displaces less then any real clean watts needed for a smooth and solid bass representation. A speaker that is very low quality and antiquated voice coil.

Basically IMHO this kit should have be more advertised as a bass unit or kit rather then sub woofer kit.

I enjoy mine every time I drive my PT, it has plenty of kick and is not even turned up very much. I'm not going to remove it, I'm not going to cut it open for forensic analysis to see if it contains genuine MOPAR parts, and I'm not going to bash the seller I got it from
