Default Replaced a Speaker in The RATMOBILE

My wife said the radio started sounding bad so I checked it out and found that the Driver's side front door speaker went South in the 2004 RATMOBILE, so I replaced it with one of the premium speakers I had grabbed from a 2001 in the junkyard a while back.

I was surprised to see that the 2004 Door Speaker is exactly like the speakers in my 2006. For some reason, I thought all Gen I Cruisers had the metal frame speakers.

Of course the connectors are different, as well as the pins themselves. So when I harvest speakers, I always harvest the connectors as well, in case you run into this.

So, this calls for some 'Plug 'n Play' wiring....

Some electrical tape and we're good to go, and, I can always convert back to the other style of speaker/connector in the future if I want to or have to.

Nice job ....but you should get yourself a package of Heat Shrink Tubing to keep in your tool chest. It makes a much better covering for any wire fixes. Neater and better insulation from the weather.

You pick a tube larger than the wire. slip it on before soldering the wires. Slip it down over the soldering connection and apply heat. It shrinks over the connection to give a nice tight fit.

Congratulation! Those 2001/2002 premium door speaker will sound MUCH better. I did this same mod on my 2005 GT. And afterwards, I could feel the "thump" on my left leg. It's huge difference.

And to go along with the heat shrink kit previously mentioned, pick up a portable butane torch/solderig iron kit:

Wow!

Yes, thanks for all the replies.

As far as the heat shrink tubing I literally have a TON of it, and I do have a heat gun. Some day when I decide to replace the passenger side, I will add the heat shrink tubing to both. I guess I was just being lazy.

They were throwing the tubing away at work, and I managed to scarf it up.

Hmm. I initially bought those speakers to put in my '06, but to be honest, if you remember, I tried them, and I liked the sound of the stock speakers better in that car.

However, the '06 has a totally different stereo, so maybe that makes a difference? Also, the rear speakers are in the rear doors in the Gen IIs and THAT makes a huge difference as far as the bass goes. It's VERY noticeable between the two Gens.

In the '04 the new speaker sounds good. Some day, before winter sets in, I will replace the other side and have a matched set. That's when I get to drive it back and forth to work.

I did a similar speaker swap in my Dodge Stratus and it DID make a huge difference. Woofers in the doors and tweeters in the dash as opposed to the standard speakers in the doors.
