Default CD player

I just purchased a 2008 cruiser. There are two issues I would like to take care of. The first is the cd player. It seems all aspects of the am/fm/cd oem unit work except the cd player. Whenever you insert a cd, it pushes it back out and displays "error". Any suggestions?

The other issue is a rear power door lock that will lock but not unlock with the button or the fob. Which section should I post this problem in?

Also, where should I post to get an understanding of getting a replacement key/fob for the vehicle? I only have one key.

Thank you.

You have to push the button twice...the 1st push unlocks the drivers door...than 2 quick pushes will unlock the other 4 doors.

As for your CD Player, it sounds like it's broken.

I do push the fob twice. Three doors will unlock, but the fourth will only make noise. It also acts the same way with the lock/unlock switch on the drivers door. Where should I post this question to generate more response?

Right here. Don't post the same question more than once. Anyone who comes to the forum will see your post in a couple of different ways. On the main forum page, that particular section will be colorized to show that there's a new posting or if like many of us do, clicking on the NEW POSTS words on the top blue line will bring up all the new postings.

23 people have already seen it but don't expect more responses from someone that has no answer for you. They'll read it and if they can't help will move on to another post.

As far as another key fob, try eBay. Look for one that matches yours. If you have an owners manual, there's a section that tells you how to program the new fob if you have one working. If the fob locks the rear hatch but doesn't open it but does open the doors, sounds like a hatch lock problem itself and not the fob.

Then most likely the actuator for that door is the problem.
Remove the door panel for that door & click the button to see what it does.
Since it's making a noise, it's possible that the clip has broken.

OK, I'll stay with the main question right here.

I do have the owners manual. I'll look again and more thoroughly about programing new fobs. I only found out about programing a new key if you have two working fobs. Maybe I missed the section about only one working.

No, the hatch is fine. It's one of the rear doors that has a problem.

OK, I'll do that. Thanks

Welcome to the forum from the great sovereign state of Arkansas!

Beside this thread, you should post in the new members section and tell us more about yourself and your PT Cruiser.

Here's some answers to your questions:

1. On the CD player, the internal mechanism in your stereo head is likely broken. However, the same type of stereo was used in 2006 thru 2010 PT's and many other Dodges and Chrysler cars and trucks. Salvage yards are full of them. They run about $35 where I live. So go to salvage yard, browse the choices and then pull yourself a nice one. There's also websites that describe the various models so you can identify the betters ones from the lower end models. Just be sure to pick one with the "half moon" sides on it like yours and not a very similar one with straight sides.

Of course, there's aftermarket stereo units too. You can installed a single DIN unit with an inexpensive adapter kit. However, if you want a full screen stereo, you will need to buy an aftermarket double DIN bezel. And those run around $100.

2. On the door lock, the locking mechanism in the door is likely faulty and/or the electric solenoid is not functioning correctly. If you are "handy", you may be able to remove the door panel and troubleshoot it. A simple adjustment and or replacement of a small piece of linkage might fix the problem. Or you may need something more extensive. If me, I would inspect it first. If I could not adjust it, I would got to a salvage yard, pull the entire locking mechanism out of a salvage PT and then install it.

3. You can buy a replacement key online. However, it will have to be programed to the car which is an expensive proposition. Some retail places, including some Walmart stores, have the ability to "clone" these keys. That means if you buy one from them, they can copy the programing code from your existing key to the new key. Your PT will not know the difference. A second option is to have a locksmith program a second key for you. The advantage of this is that the new key will work but it will have its own code. This will give you two unique keys. And with two unique keys, you can then program additional keys yourself following procedures readily available online. The Walmart key cloning will likely be cheaper but not by much. Expect to spend somewhere around $100 or more depending on where you live.

Again, welcome to the forum. You should stick around and let us know how the repairs go. And you should join in on all the fun around here. PT Cruiser fever is contagious.

ALSO - NOTE: The Radios from the 2006 - 2008 and 2009 - 2010 models have a different CAN BUS. Very important!! From what I have learned the '06 - '08 have the 'low-speed' CAN BUS and are compatible with yours. The '09 - 10 have the 'high-speed' CAN BUS and are NOT compatible with yours.

I grabbed an '07 stereo for my '06 to upgrade it, and it works just fine.

Happy Pickin' (In the yard I go to Stereos are $27 - any model.)

Welcome.

The rear door is almost certainly not the fob if it acts the same way for the fob and the switch. As suggested, it is probably the actuator. Sometimes it is a clip, with older cars sometimes I just had to clean and lube them. If it were me, I probably would put it on my list (at the bottom) and just pull the knob up whenever necessary. It will open if you pull the knob, right?
