Default Square Peg in a Round Hole

So the OEM radio/CD player in my '06 Touring is starting to get a little weird (rejects perfectly good CDs as unreadable). Would also like to get a more modern unit that would link to my phone via Bluetooth so I can take calls. The OEM unit appears to be a double DIN size unit, but there's a problem. The knobs are mounted WAY outboard on the radio body, so that there are half-circle cutouts in the dash panel on either side of the radio. I guess this is supposed to be stylish or something, but it looks like I'm going to have a couple of extra half-holes on either side of the new unit.
Suggestions?

Thanks

The stock is not a double din, but I believe 1.5 din.

Without changing the center bezel, you can get an install kit that will fill in the half round knob openings in the bezel and then have a small compartment at the bottom of the stereo and then you can get any single din stereo that you like:

Without having to cut and splice any wires, you should seek out one of the CanBUS stereo wiring install kits which should make the new installation much easier.

A while back I looked at one of the single din flip screen stereos available but I rejected it when I didn't like how with the screen flipped up, it would cover the center window switches and the center a/c vents.

To install a double din unit, you would have to get a different center bezel and might have to modify the center shelf that the new stereo would sit on to make room for it:

Check out Crutchfield. They will show you the kits you need. A quick search showed this one for upgrading to an aftermarket unit.

The kit you posted is for a double din stereo.

This should be the correct one for a single din unit:

I like this one because the one I originally posted, which you see a lot of, has that small odd little, basically useless compartment, at the bottom of the stereo. The Crutchfield one fills in on all sides of the stereo.

Here's what it would look like installed onto a single din stereo:

Then the entire unit would mount exactly as the stock stereo does.

This is not in a PT, but would give you some idea of what the kit and stereo would look like:

I was just pointing out that Crutchfield has the stuff.

Just put in your model/year and they will show you what fits.

Here's the same kit on Ebay as Crutchfield has, but for about half price and with free shipping:

WalMart also offers it, don't know if it would be free shipping to one of their stores where you could pick it up:

I actually like the little cubby below the stereo (good place to stash CDs). Who makes that one?
Thanks
