Default PC

I've been building a computer into my car. Everything is in and hooked up for the computer and also secured. Tomorrow, it all gets power and neatened up. A few days after that, when the device comes in, I add the video out to the screens. I'll post more info later.

Okay, details:
566 MHz Celeron
128 MB RAM
2 hard drives totaling 70GB storage
CD-RW/DVD drive

The motherboard is installed under the passenger seat. The hard drives are attached to a "shelf" I made from the top of a $.98 plastic tub. The "shelf" is suspended above the motherboard, hung quite securely. The DVD drive will face out the front, through a fake drawer front which also will have the power button for the computer. The computer's power supply will be tucked under the seat as well. It will use a backup battery, stashed in the back, so that when the car shuts off, the computer does not crash. Instead, it will stay on for 1 minute, then shut down.

This computer will be capable of playing DVDs, writing CDs, storing and playing over 10,000 MP3s, as well as computer games (not new ones), ordinary word processing and networking.

The video from the computer will be displayed on existing screens in the car, as well as a 7" screen in the glove compartment. Input to the computer will be achieved with a touchpad and keyboard. Eventually, a cordless keyboard will replace the one I'm using now and I will add a cordless mouse with the touchpad.

I'll have pics in a few days.

I'm going to try and make it to Cruise the Falls. I won't have a preregistration spot, so it'd be more like just showing up when they have it. Hopefully, by then, I can have a little more of the suspension finished off and some of the engine build done...

I'll go hunt my old games and install them...the Sims, Alpha Centauri, Civ2, Starcraft, maybe some of those "shooter" games too...

RN, I would love to see the pics. Sounds like you may have hit on something there.

I just got the power source and computer together and turned it on and left it running for a "test run" through town. Bumps and bad roads did nothing to the hard drives. All I need to do is get audio into the stereo now, lose the interference caused by power sources near RCA and neaten it up.

Great job RN! Sorry I'm so late to respond to this. I went to your site to see photos, but the PC wasn't there yet. Let us know when we might get a look at the setup. Too bad ya couldn't have put in a Mac. That would have combined my two favorite "things" in one package. I have to admit, I wonder about how/if it gets used, but I suppose that's not the point eh?
