I was thinking of purchasing the Mopar Sirius reciever to add to the 6-disc changer in my GT. Does anybody have any experience with it? Where does it mount?

The Tuner will go under the Driver's seat. However, you don't have to add the Sirius option to put a changer in. There are adapter cables available to allow installation of after-market changers to work with the changer controls in your factory radio.
The adaptors, or "protocol converters" run from $70.00 to $130.00 and can allow you to add Sirius and CD Changer or Sirius and Aux Input; all controlled by factory radio. The $124.00 installation kit that you have to get to install the Mopar Sirius Tuner when a external Changer isn't already present is probably a protocal converter, judging from the price. The Factory Radio will only display Program Category, Channel Number and Channel Name. It will not scroll the Song, Artist or CD that song came from data that is included in the Sirius stream. If the Factory radio is the base model (RBK - AM/FM/CD), it will onlly show the channel info. This is the best that I can come up with. I got a faxed copy of the Sirius Option Owner's Manual from Chrysler Customer Service, and this is what I could decipher, along with the info on the protocol converter that I had already found. I am running the Kenwood RF Modulated Sirius radio setup. It has a separate display unit, and will allow you to scroll through all the info on the data stream. It is about half the cost of the Mopar system. 2003 Onyx Green PT-GT K&N Drop-In Air Filter Kenwood Sirius Satellite Radio System Garmin Street Pilot III Color GPS |

I had a Chrysler dealer install the mopar receiver/antenna kit($174) & the PT specific installation kit ($125) They charged me $100 labor, and it took them about 2 1/2 hours to install it.
Except for the antenna on the roof, you wouldn't know anything was done to the car. They drilled a hole in the roof, mounted the antenna, ran the cable down the "b" pillar to the left rear quarter panel, where the receiver was installed. The cable to the radio was run under the trim and up into the dash, where it simply plugged into the radio. Like I said, except for the antenna-bump you don't see anything on the car. Turn on the radio, hit the "mode" button once for CD and twice for Sirius. You use seek, scan, pty and the memory buttons as you would for am & fm radio. On my RAZ radio (am/fm/cd/cassette) You see the channel name and number. You do not see the song name and artist. I checked out the kenwood setup at bestbuy and I was turned off by having another tuner to deal with. I also talked to one of their installers who said that the antenna would have a wire coming out of it, on the roof, going down to the nearest opening where they put it through the gasket. I've since seen this on another car in a parking lot and boy, does it look hideous!!! The Chrysler parts and installation are fully warrantied by Chrysler. Even though they list the kit on the mopar.com website for 2003 PT's , they installed it on my 2002. You must make sure the radio suitable for the kit. Using for the radio for the first time today, I was listening to the Sirius comedy channel. They were playing the Monty Python skit "Holy Handgrenade" from "The quest for the Holy Grail". I was laughing and NOT listening to ANY commercials!!!! Scott |
