Your ears are being damaged LONG before 150 db. Exposure to sounds in excess of 90 db for an extended period of time can cause hearing damage (that is the reason that OSHA regulates noise levels above 90 db in the workplace). Even brief exposure to sounds above 140 decibels can result in pain and permanent hearing damage.
For those who don't know, every time you increase the sound level 10 db, it is 10 times as loud, or put another way, sound level doubles for every 3 db increase. A normal conversation is 60-70 db, a power saw is 110 db. 140 db is the sound of a jet engine from 100 feet away and 144 db is over twice that loud.

ANY sustained noise for a legenthy period of time can cause hearing loss & tinnitus. I have both. A substantial hearing loss & severe tinnitus.
I used to be a stereo system installer & NEVER used hearing protection. As I never used it at the race track. Just listening to headphones at a low volume, can cause hearing loss in certain frequencies. If you are in your car with 144 dbl, that is just stupid. Not only will it cause hearing loss, it can cause MANY health issues. From loss of breath, to heart failure. |

Ok first of all thanks for watching out for the fella, but his question was "How loud is yours?" not "does it cause damage?". I've been competing in Bass offs for almost a decade, I've sat in cars that were louder than 150 DB its a rush, and yes I had ear phones on. However here is a comparison chart 140db is = to a shot gun blast at point blank range, 120 db is = to a Nascar event near the track and 170 db is = to a shuttle launch, which by the way any hardcore competitor backing a sponser will tell you is the mark everyone wants to hit. Bass offs are fun! Its a great way to meet people and show off your ride and there is much satisfaction and pride involved when you take home a trophy. Way to go man on the 144 db. Your right PTs are great for bass. I got a 145 db out of my set-up a while back in VA at DB Drag event. I got a JL Audio 13"W6V2 in a sealed box with a JL Audio 500/1 Mono Block Amp pushing it. They sound great. I have a hearing problem now too, they were right in cationing you about it, but its fun and its a great hobby to enjoy. Cool cars and great systems and cool people you meet and hang with. You can't customize any vehicle now a day without an awsome stereo. We play it loud and proud.[?]

First off, there's nothing in any rules here on the forum saying we can't comment on someone's post. We weren't putting him down or hurting his feeling (I hope). Attending your audio competitions is fine, but the majority of the younger generation that go to extreme of having that kind of system also play it "that loud" while on the road to the annoyance of 90% of the general population. I'm not saying you or Brown03 does, just a heck of a lot of them.

Got an 8" Bazooka Bass subwoofer powered by a 200W Clarion Amp myself. I had it professionally installed and as soon as it was turned on the whole PT started to rattle and shake. That was enough for me, it's now set at the lowest setting and still puts out almost too much low end.

I hope this is not to far off subject. I just bought a new system and I would (when it is hooked up)like to know how many db it's hitting, I just don't want to be in the car when it's happening. Now for a question that I have put to other forums (can't have enough opinions) Is it doable for someone that really hasn,t hooked up a stereo since the early 70's where all you had was a hot (Power), neg (ground) and a + & - speaker wires and done. Below is the system I just purchased, anyone with any help. Oh yea before anyone asks I have the Harness and all of the amp cables, everything I am suppose to need.
