There is a secret to fuel economy. I've posted this before and I'll do it again. This past week and a half I averaged over 27MPG in my PT GT (stage none).

The #1, most important rule? Don't let how fast other drivers are going influence how fast you go. Unless the other drivers are in front of you, and going a lot slower, you're fine.

Use the cruise control. It will do a better job than probably 90% of people (myself included) at maintaining a steady speed.

Drive the freeways when there are fewer people on them. For me, this means either leaving for work at 7-7:30 or 9 - 9:30, and returning around 4-4:30 or 6-6:30. This way, stop and go traffic will be at a minimum.

If the majority of your driving is in the city, at a lot of stoplights and such, sorry, you are screwed. Screwed screwed screwed. 17MPG is fairly decent for our cars in the city, because every time you leave a light, unless you have the lightest touch on the throttle, you're hitting that turbo boost, and that uses up gas by the truckload.

Premium where I live north of Seattle is now $3.05/gallon and I'm confident it will be increasing steadily in the days and weeks ahead. They are saying to be prepared to pay $4/gallon for gas! [:0] [V]

We are at 3.08. Please explain to me though how one gas station can change their prices three times in a single day. I can understand paying more if the gas station has to pay more but when they raise the price three times without ever getting a new delivery, that's gouging. Isn't that against the law and why has nothing ever done about it? I watched my local station do this one time when the report came out in the morning that there would be a shortage and then was retracted as an error by the afternoon. In the meantime, he had raised his price - twice! And this guy is the cheapest one in town.

Just hit 3.19 for 91 here in the valley of the sun. My gas mileage would be so much better if i just had stage 1 or none. but you gotta pay to play.

So is it ok to use 87 90 or 89 instead? This is getting crazy.
Nope, not unless you plan to destroy your engine before the warranty even expires.

Come on boys and girls, stop whining about the price of premium! No matter what, the gas prices are rising, so even if you could go with regular gas safely, premium is only a few cents more anyway. If you're going to pay alot for regular gas then you might as well pay alittle extra for the good stuff!

How's this for price; my corner Shell station is usually the most expensive gas station within a mile radius, but the other day it had premium for $2.95 a gallon. Yesterday it jumped up to $3.69! [:0] That's a $.74 cent difference per gallon, and again, they are the most expensive around here while another Shell a couple blocks away is at $3.15. Bunch of thieves. I hope that damn gas station blows up ....

From page 214 of the '04 owners manual......

"2.4L High Output Engine"
"The use of high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane rating of 91 is recomended but not required. High quality unleaded gasoline having a minumum octane rating of 87 may safely be used for your vehicle. Use of lower octane gasolines, however, may result in reduced aceleration performance."

There isn't much talk on this forum about adding a water/alcohol injection kit but on another forum, the interest is growing. This is not a "Run your car on water" piece of crap. It is used in racing applications to effectively raise the octane of the air/fuel charge for more power. For street applications, it can allow the use of lower octane for normal, around town driving but kick in with the spray when at high boost or load to prevent knock. A proper kit must be tuned for the application. It's not "One size fits all". And the kit must be well designed and should cost around $300 (You can buy a lot of gas for $300). Care must be taken to keep it filled and maintained also. So I don't recomend anyone to go this route without a good understanding of how it works.

A place to check for more info on this is....
