Default Pop and backfire,2500-3000 RPM

Hello all, new guy here. Just bought an '03 GT ,49k miles.Problem is abucking and backfire when accelerating, happens between 2500-3 k rpm, then levels out.I am not an ace mechanic, but can do minor repairs
Would new plugs and wires help, or any other ideas as to cause?
Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated,Thanks.

A new set of plugs and wires - make sure you get something better than stockers, I use Magnecors, but there are other good sets as well - would certainly be in order with 49k. This is something you can easily do yourself. Gap them a bit tighter than stock - especially if you go with iridiums which should be gapped at around .030. Check air filter, turbo fittings for leaks, etc.

If this does the trick, great. If not, more troubleshooting is in order. Let us know how it's going...[?]

I used Magnecor wires on my '03 GT and they worked well. I used stock copper plus plugs gapped at .040 and my 280 hp GT ran very well. Irridium plugs are overkill, more expensive and do nothing for performance. Friend of mine ran stock plugs in his PT turbo at the track, switched to irridiums and there wasn't a bit of difference.

Sounds like a problem I had. Turned out to be wires.

I bet on wires, too. The stock ones are made from linguini, I think...

Looks like gapping the plugs at .040 did the trick. Has been running great since change made. Thanks all.
