Default Stage 1, Yes or No?

Hey guys, I'm not mechanical, so I'm not going to do this myself. But I was thinking of ordering the Stage 1 kit from Chrysler and having them install it in my 2005 PTGT, auto. It seems like there are a lot of problems initially with this, so I'm tempted not to do it all all. Your opinions will be greatly appreaciated and thanks.

Where did you hear about problems with the Stage 1? In the newer models it's just a matter of swapping out the computer. The older ones require a change of fuel injectors. If your not mechanically inclined, yes, have the dealer or an outside mechanic do it for you (probably cheaper). You need your VIN number to order the Stage 1 so it's made for your engine. There shouldn't be any problems.

When owners start adding, all the other items to squeeze out more hp, then problems might arise.

P.S. Actually, the VIN has nothing to do with having the Stage 1 made for your engine. Chrysler (or whoever owns it now) just want to keep a record of who has it. Heck, now that there is new owners, maybe you won't need to supply your VIN.

Thanks for your advise. As I read thru the threads here, it seems that people are having problems with it initially. This is my daily driver so I can't afford to get stuck from a breakdown. What would you figure the cost would be if I got this thru Chrysler?

I don't have one myself but read where it goes for about $350. Not sure if that's with the injectors or with just the computer.

Most people get the Stage 1 from a guy named Tommy TThrift who is a parts manager (and forum member) of a Chrysler dealer. He seems to have the best prices for forum members. Do a search on his name for more info or call him direct at: 1(800)296-5337 Ext. 338 If he's not there, leave a message and he'll call you back.

The only problems the Stage 1 ever had was for the '03 GT. It was a computer glitch that would make the PT overheat. That was very early on when the kit first came out. There have been no other problems with Stage 1 at all, either for the PT turbo or the SRT-4. I had no problems with Stage 1 on my '03 GT or with Stage 1 or Stage 2 on my '05 SRT-4.

As for install, on the pcm there are four bolts. If you can use a rachet you can do this. The four cables unlock with a red sliding plastic tab and the cables come off easily. The auto tranny learn is so easy a beginning driver can do it. If you go to the dealer for the install they'll charge you around $200 for install and tranny learn. For them it's a 20-30 minute process. If you want to spend the money, though, then go for it. Stage 1 will put a huge smile on your face.

I have also read here or in another forum that new plugs and plug wires are recommended. I can hunt down which ones if you/any one would like. I was completely ready to do the upgrade on my 06 turbo lite. However, premium gas in N. Cal is expensive!!! In my Harley @35-40 MPG I can do it but......... probably not in the PT

Thanks for your help. I'm already on premium gas with the GT, but wonder how the gas mileage will be effected. I put on about 33,000 mile per year. Premium gas averages around $ 3.39 a gallon down here in South Florida. If I'm lucky, I can get it for $3.29 at some stations or $ 3.28 currently at Costo, which by the way uses Amoco gas.

I really appreciate everyone's opinions on this subject. Thanks again guys.

Go for it. I have had stage 1 in my 05 GT ragtop for almost 2 years with no problems at all. Mileage was unchanged from before even when I have had my foot in it at times. Best mod I've ever done. My PT is also my daily driver.

Captain Kidd:

Any other mods to the drivetrain on your ragtop other than the Stage I?

Do you have a manual or auto tranny?

Is the smile on your really wide as Mean Green says????

Thanks!
