Hello Dalite,
What portion of the smog check, basic or enhanced, requires the smog tech to install a scan tool and read the PCM data? I have never installed a scan tool before or after performing a smog inspection. I have never seen a smog check tech install a scan tool and read the PCM data on any of my cars. Can you explain how you read the "CARB level" from the DLC. What is a "CARB level" anyway? Are you a CA.smog check technician?
Hey, Cal Cruiser, have you researched how many "tuners" actually have their systems certified, not very many.
Kirby, I'll never catch up to your diatribes.

Lets push some more buttons, ptgtcb [8)]

P.S. Did you read the part where I agreed that MP should certify the kits? I also know I am wasting my time with you three anyway!
The entire reason for the OBD firmware is for measuring the car's compliance with and management of Emission Conrols.

On Board Diagnostics (OBD) is the first hint; diagnostics are performed On Board; rather than via outside connections.

The OBDIII spec is designed to eliminate all need for manual inspection, by using a transmitted signal from the car to transponders located on the nation's highways and in spot check locations. That is the basic concept of OBD; emission control and measurement.

The firmware revision level, PCM revision level, etc can be read on the DRBIII. The owner can get some of the revision level info by holding the trip odometer button in while turniong the ignition on.

The days of outside intervention with emission control systems are coming to a close. With computer management, control and reporting of emission control, the sniffer concept is as up to date as a carb on an EFI engine.

In my day, I used some sniffer gear when performing tune-ups using SUN gear, but those days were 23 years ago. I don't know at what point the switch was made to reading from the car's computer, but I suspect that it has been around 5 (possibly more) years ago.

When/If OBDIII is implemented, it will be kinda hard running after a car at highway speeds waving an exhaust pipe sniffer probe over your head in a meanacing manner; think about it... Better yet, look at the service manual and the diagnostic manuals for more info on the task manager program that runs on the PCM. Also a little research on the OBD project will confirm it's importance as the hub of emission control compliance.

I have never been to LaLa land, but I don't think there is that much of a void of info there to prevent an understanding of the On Board part of On Board Diagnostics.

As for my views on Stage I, you can read any number of posts both here and on the SRT-4 forums where I firmly state that the upgrade is the best bang for the buck that is available, and that it is an electronic world as far as getting the best out of the PT GT. I have some issues with some of the Chrysler cost-cutting measures, and how they offer the performance that the car was designed to deliver on the al-a-carte plan, but I have never said that Stage I wouldn't get the job done.

If it comes down to a case of responsibility for environmental non-compliance, all the info published before the sale is made assures that the consumer knows it is not legal for street use, and punishable by a fine of up to $27,500.

Would that stop me from getting it for my GT? Probably not, if I wanted it bad enough. I have had one on order for some time now..

The time to have forced their hand was at the onset. There has been too much blind support already, and no incentive for them to do anything about the CARB compliance. We, as owners, have voted with our checkbooks on the issue of whether the legality issue is important. I would rather have seen a unified front where the customer rejected the concept of purchasing a product

1) Stage 1 is wholly and totally without warranty.
2) Any damage caused by Stage 1 is unwarranted.

3) There could be a problem with the shipment of injectors without thermal shielding on the tip that could cause injector failure.
Any damage caused therin would be born by the individual, not DC.

ptgtcb...I guess I am just used to being able to buy parts for my mustang. Eveyone makes CARB stuff for that...oh, wait, they make stuff for camaros too, and so does TRD for Toyota, they are factory tuners, maybe Nissan?, oh yeah, them too. Even limited production Mini has compliant upgrades...these are just the ones that come immediately to mind...what was I thinking, nobody does this.

LOL! I am just a midwest country boy stuck in the city. We have discussed moving back but we find it hard to leave our grown son and the potential grandkids.

It is my understanding that a manufacturer can modify an engine family and simply supply data to CARB that the engine mods did not adversely affect emissions. When K&N fitted my car with their new Typhoon intake that is what they did. Now, if the parts do cause substantially more pollution then they need to show CARB that the cats work and air quality is not worsened. The big cost was to get the engine family CARB certified. Now the rub may be that CARB requires a long term warantee on all parts that affect emissions and MOPAR does not offer warantees!!

ahhhh! So you say it isn't about the money! They would do it if they could!

I haven't heard any noise from the usual suspects at Mopar Performance since the kits have started to ship other than the initial bad programing fiasco.

Hey ptgtcb,
If your brother will put you up, Pomona is not very far. It would be nice to actually interact with the real DC folks rather than just reading their scripted statements. It would also be nice to meet with a few of the folks that post infrequently on this site.
