Default How do I know which turbo kit is installed ?

I am a proud new owner of a beautiful 2004 red/ fully chromed out Touring PT Cruiser 23k miles. 2.4l turbo auto transmission. I am Second owner I bought through a reputable Kia dealer they said it was a trade in. The original owner had DaimlerChrysler install a turbo upgrade. I can hear the wastegate wine on cue, but I am not sure what Stage kit is on board. Can someone tell me where to look in the engine for a part #. I want to know exactly what's under the hood... Loving my Cruiser. Oh yea this baby has 4 red florescent tubes underneath and boy does the road GLOW. Thanks

Sounds like you have a turbo lite, which started out at 180 hp. If you have the Stage 1 upgrade you are big time bumped up to around 235 hp. The S1 upgrade consists of a new pcm which should have a sticker on it that says "For offroad use only". The pcm is on the driverside firewall.

The Jet chip is IMHO not worth the money. It is nothing compared to the Mopar Stage 1 upgrade. At the track a Mopar Stage 1 equipped turbo lite will totally stomp a turbo lite with the Jet chip. I seriously doubt there was a turbo upgrade. You need a lot of supporting mods to run a big turbo. A big turbo is almost twice the size of the stock one. Does the car have a boost gauge and air/fuel gauge? You'd have to at least have those two gauges with a big turbo. You'd have to at least have a boost gauge with an upgraded adjustable wastegate (wga). Without a boost gauge and an upgraded adj wga you wouldn't know what boost you are running and could possibly run lean and blow the motor. You could possibly have the Mopar blow off valve, but it is only a noise maker. I have to seriously doubt a Kia dealer would know all this, especially what it is all about, when even 99.9999% of all Chrysler dealers would have no clue what has been done to the car. You probably have a very nice turbo lite PT, but the dealer was less than truthfull or didn't know what they are talking about.

Thanks I hear you here's my plan... Bringing the PT into the Chrysler dealer where I believe the original owner bought it and I know for sure from carfax that it's been worked on there. I purchased an extended warranty so I will have the tranny checked since it downshifts hard from 2nd gear to 1st when tranny cold upon braking to a stop about twice a day in the cold morning.I will also have them identify the goings on with this really awesome car. BTW I just got about 230 miles to a tank of gas from F to E. I have a tendency to drive with the cruise control quite often. Maybe the Jet module has a little to do with that as well. I'll post a follow up after I get the PT back from Dealer...

A work to the wise, do NOT run the gas tank below 1/4 as the fuel pump is in the tank and it uses the fuel to keep it cool. Running the tank to empty or close to empty enough times and the tank must be lower to replace the fuel pump. Total cost with labor runs about $300 or so it has been said. You will not get your gas back as they have to drain the tank to do the job.

Thanks I fill when needle hits the first red area and usually by the time the bell goes off.I have estimated mpg based on 1/2 tank reading.- looking like it's a Turbo lite with Mopar blow off valve and a Jet Performance chip. Having the tranny drained and new filter to try and stop the morning hard downshift.

Check your mileage with a pen & pencil or pen, that is the only true way or post to "FUELLY", it is easy to use, I started a couple of months ago.
