...should I add a BOV along with Stage 1 on my automatic PT? I plan on having my dealer install Stage 1 in the next couple of weeks and am wondering if the BOV would help. Right now if I let it wind out it really seems to "nose over" (as another poster put it) just before it shifts. Would this be alleviated with the addition of a BOV?

Wait for stage 2, the BOV is a nice noise maker, and should help prolong the life of the turbo. ESP if you're running higher boost than stock.

Thanks AC, but for my use the cost of Stage 2 isn't something I'm willing to do, at least not based on tentative pricing I've seen thrown around. Stage 1 is pretty cheap, really, and I don't plan on racing, I just want more grunt. As for the BOV being a nice noise maker, yeah, I've read all about that and don't really care about the noice one way or the other. I'm more interested in turbo life - as you mentioned - and elimiating that dead spot just before shifting.

The BOV will add a pleasant (to some) noise upon decelleration. It has been debated as to whether it adds ANYTHING else to the mix.
Enjoy the fact that it is relatively cheap and easy to install, but don't expect anything more performance-wise than you would get with chrome wheels v.s. painted.[|)]

As for turbo longevity, this would only be a factor if you plan a 200,000mi ownership (besides th whole turbo assembly is only $500 to replace). Cost benefit ratio negligible. Go for it if you want the noise, nothing else. (S1 takes care of the shift lag, and gives you more HP).

Mike, just out of curiosity, what dealer around here is going to install the S-1 package for you? Perhaps you have found a more "modification friendly" dealership.

The stock surge valve does pretty much the same thing as a BOV - it just plumbs it back into the intake vs venting to atmosphere. I don't see any longevity increases by replacing it.. FYI though: if you open up your intake system at all, you'll be able to hear the flutter sound of the surge valve and it's pretty lame. My 6 yr old tells people "our pt cruiser turbo farts!"..

Thanks for all the input. I didn't expect the BOV to add anything with regards to HP, just thought it might lessen the impact on the turbo or reduce that lag. If the programming in the PCM takes care of that then great.

Jason_L, sorry to hear your PT seems to have, according to your 6 yr old, a lower intestinal disorder!

Cal Cruzer, I bought my PT at Tuttle-Click Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep at the Tustin Auto Center. I spoke with the service manager there several weeks ago about Stage 1 and brought in one of his techs. Seems this particular tech has Stage 1 on his SRT-4, and these guys had just had a discussion with DCX about same. They said that as long as I'm buying a DCX part and they are installing it they won't negatively impact my warranty. This is the second car I've purchased from these guys, and they seem to be a pretty respectable operation. I'm going back next week to discuss further and make an appointment for the install. I'll keep you posted.

THIS IS UNBELIEVEABLE! That is where I bought mine last year and they told me that ANY mods would void the warranty no matter what it was. I have had an overall bad experience with just about every aspest of my purchase and after sale service with them (even trying to get the things that were on my "due bill" done right). Sounds like you are having better luck with them or perhaps they have changed personel since I stopped going there.

Turbo lag is the time it takes for the exhaust to spool the turbo. Just clearing that up... (We have VERY little thanks to our teeny compressor)

If you want to extend the life of your turbo, get a turbo timer.
