I recently purchased an '04 GT. I LOVE the power & I'm already looking to upgrade it. I'm planning to add Borla dual exhaust and probably K&N air intake. I may also consider upgrading to S1, but I was concerned about emissions testing for Illinois.
I've been reading several threads here and at several other forums. This will be my only car, so I want to make sure I have no problems. Will going to S1 prevent me from passing my emissions test? How about S2? |

Stage 1 is not legal for any pollution contoled vehicle operating on the street. And if you operate it in competition you not only loose your warranty on the perfromance parts but on the whole powertraine!! I dont know about stage 2.

Don't have any pictures taken (evidence) while/if you run your car in competition.
Remove Stage 1 and replace with Stage 0 when you go for your annual/bi-annual emissions check. That's about a 10 minute procedure with an 04 since you only need to swap out the computer. Also I've read a post or two where owners have said they passed emissions with Stage 1... No one knows what Stage 2 will do for our P.T's since ours will be slightly different than the one used for the SRT4's. Deen

Stage 0, is that the original PCM?

Yes.
If you have an 04 you are lucky. If it's an auto, you prolly still need to do the tranny relearn procedure. IF 5spd, then it's cake. Us 03's have to pull injectors and take the damn car apart.

One possible problem (and I have mentioned this before, with out much comment) with the SI PCM and emission testing is the OBDII system monitor readiness test. It is rumored that PVO disabled several monitors and if the test detects more than 2 monitors not ready then it will fail the functional portion of the test, 1 for 05'. This is not just CA, many states have adopted this test and some only require this test and do not even test tail pipe emissions.
If you remove the SI PCM then you had better do this several weeks prior to the test so the monitors can be set properly or you will fail. I do not feel that you would need to remove the SI injectors on the 03's since these are the same injectors used on the 04's. It is my guess that DC had a lean fuel condition better solved with larger injectors than with PCM programming(High RPM Mis-fire TSB?) and the PCM should have no problem adapting to the injectors. Again, you need to drive the car to allow the PCM to adapt prior to the test. Just my 2 cents worth ![]() |

ptgtcb I am going to agree with you that there must be a reason our friends at DC have not applied to get the stage 1 certified. It has always ben rumored that it has to do with OBDII. If this is the case then stage 2 will never be certified either. It has also been suggested by DC engineers that stage 1 and stage 2 but not stage 3 mods will meet any objective emissions standards so far in existance both Feds and CA. Is this OBDII ready test done on all cars in CA? Just test only tests or what?? Any mods anyone does to an engine that is certified needs to be recertified by the manufacturer for an EO! What has to be stated is that the mod does not effect the emissions in any substantial way and that the reliabiulity and longevity of the emissions systems remains in tact! If DC has disabled any emissions system and subsystem they can not even get an EO, but would have to certify the engine all over again a very expensive process!!

If the SRT folks engineer the SII with CARB certification in mind then there would be no problem getting a E.O exemption.
It was, with SI, that DC higherups did not want PVO to take the time to engineer it with CARB approval in mind, all they cared about was getting it to market ASAP(can't divulge the source, but it is fact). Engineering is engineering and they had all the tools they needed at their disposal to properly engineer it at a minimal increase in cost . This, maybe, could be the explanation for the hold on the release of SII for the GT Cruiser. I'll take it either way, but, would much rather it be CARB approved! even if I have to pay a little bit more. NOT 400.00 more than SRT-4 though! Then again, maybe I would? [:0] |
