Gang,
Just got the Stage 1. Thanks Tommy. I'm a little nervous about this quick learn tranny thing. I just red the post from Scottscars concerning his transmission woes. I must admit, my confidence level has dropped significantly. Also, the directions say to torque the screws a certain amount. I don't have a torque wrench, can I just guesstimate how tight? Seriously, any advice on this install is appreciated. Tell me I can do it. Any advice? |

If all you have to do is mount the PCM, it's easier than us 03's. Your instructions r prolly 2 pages on how to unscrew and re-screw 7 bolts.
If you can't torque them, just hand tighten them, for the PCM mount it's ok to do it that way. If it was the manifold or something like that. torquing to proper specs is important. IF you do the tranny quik learn like it is recommended, you won't or shouldn't have any problems as most autostick S1 owners will say. GL. Rob

Arthur,
Don't worry too much about torquing the PCM mounting bolts. Just snug them down.I noticed the bolts went in really tight on my Stage 1 PCM, but they all went in OK. Just shoot a little WD-40 on em before you install em'. Man! I can't emphasize enough the Tranny Quick learn. Do it JUST as THEY SAY per the instructions and you will have NO problems. No full throttle starts til quick learn has been done. Just drive it normally to the location where you will do the quick learn. Do it! Then enjoy! After The Quick Learn the tranny will then learn your particular driving style and then make the shifts smooth. Also, when you go to autostick mode you'll notice much firmer shifts. Any other questions please let us know or call Tommy. He's a Great Guy with alot of experience with the PT Turbo. Good Luck! John aka retroman [?] |

Hey, take it from me, the quick learn was no prob. The install was a pain. I did the PCM swap on the shoulder at the highway. That way, I could start with the quick learn asap. I wish I put some WD-40 on the screws before I installed it. Hopefully S2 will come out soon, so I can spray the screws then.

Thanks for all the advice.
When doing the quick learn, I just leave it in drive, no autostick. Right? It's ok to drive it normally until I find a nice place to do the quick learn? What if I'm challenged on the way to do the quick learn? Man that's gonna be hard to pass (literally). Thanks again guys.

I did my quick learn early on a Saturday morning and had no problems. 5,000 miles later, and half a dozen trips to the drag strip, and I don't have the slightest hint of a problem with my tranny. I also agree with the comments about mounting the PCM; it's just a bunch of bolts holding the darn thing to the firewall. No gaskets, seals or anything else that would be truly torque sensitive. Just make 'em tight. (yeah, that's specific advice, isn't it? ) |
