Default Compressor Surge

Ok, I gots a little problem with my car since I installed the Stage 1. I have a non adjustable 15lb. wastegate actuator, an MBC, and a Mopar BOV. I have had no problem with the car before Stage 1. The wastegate solenoid was bypassed because of the aftermarket wastegate. Regardless of that, my BOV doesn't always go off. All the boost gets backfed into the turbo, causing compressor surge. It's like a real loud fluttering noise. This only happens if I drive normal (shifting at around 2-2 and a half grand). If I get on it then it goes off. I am kinda worried. Anybody else experience this with some similiar mods. Should I put the factory wastegate back on and let the solenoid do it's work, buy Adam's VAK with an aftermarket BOV, or is there something else I should do with the setup I have?

What nipple off the turbo housing do you have your WGA tied into?

There are two nipples on the compressor side of the turbo housing...one closest to the firewall and one on the turbo discharge nozzle. Try Teeing into the nipple closest to the firewall if you haven't done so yet.

Hey guys I notice the same thing with the MBV. I don't think that it's surging, I thinks it's letting the small amount of pressure off in a step by step way. It' sounds like little type of clicking. I noticed it even with the complete stock set-up.[:I]

I would make sure that the Mopar BOV is installed in the right direction. It looks like any orientation is correct, but it only goes one way. If you have it clocked in the wrong position, it will not work.

The BOV is in the correct postion. I have had that since i got the car 14k ago. I think you guys may be right with it just surging, it is just different from what I am used to, not haveing the stage one. I don't have the WGA off of any nipple. I have the MBC in place of the solenoid that controls the WGA. Thanks for your guy's help.

There is a tan line comming off the turbo and a brown line comming off the WGA that go to the #2 solenoid. Hyracer is telling you to come off the tan line which is attached to the turbo nipple next to the fire wall. If you bypassed the #2 solenoid at the solenoid then you have it correct. You are going to experience turbo surge and flutter because the turbo spools up too quickly under part throttle conditions. You really should install some sort of dual stage automatic boost control to allow PCM control of the WAG and allow manual boost control @ WOT, I would be concerned about running lean @ part throttle! Annnd, I would also recommend limiting full boost in 1st gear as someone posted that the axles will come apart.

I thought that the solenoid will hold the heavier sprung WGA at 30lbs if you didn't bypass it. Otherwise I would let the solenoid control it.

Fist off I mis-read your post and Hyracers, I was thinking MBC and what you describe was/is common with a MBC install, my bad.
On the other hand, when I reread your first post I am confused as how you have everything hooked up. Picture?
How do you currently have it all hooked up? How much boost are you running, you never said how much boost your getting.
If you have the mopar BOV there is really no way the boost can be blown off back into the compressor and I do not believe that is what is causing the flutter and surge anyway. I beleive the turbo is spooling up too quickly and not enough intake air is available, flutter and it is also leaning out and most likely the PCM is pulling timing, surge.
Let us know.

I don't have a pic right now. I disconnected the WGA solenoid and put an MBC there. I am boost about 14 psi since it is soo cold around here now. What I thought was happening was the BOV was not even opening so all the pressure was getting slammed into the turbine when I closed the throttle. I think Speedturns is correct in what is happening. It makes since anyway but any more input is appreciated.

Funny...I noticed less compressor surge with Stage I installed. This was because when I boosted smaller amounts (1-3) the BOV would still react. Previously I would hear the dreaded surge. Are you saying you hear it after boosting 14lbs? If it only does it when you are boosting 1-2 lbs, I wouldnt be too concerned because that happens under stock conditions too. The only reason you hear it now if because you have an aftermarket intake. If you're still getting surges at higher psis, then Id start to worry.

As a preventative measure, if you dont want any surge at all, just try not to get into boost when your daily driving it.
