Default S1 and emissions

For these that live in states with emissions testing, please comment on the fact that I heard that by putting on S1 you will NOT be able to pass emission testing? true and false? Gary

I don't know Gary. I read someone else in NY had a few friends who have Stage 1 and already took the emissions and passed with flying colors. NY is pretty strick too. If you goto a place that goes by the book, they will fail you for having a wheel out of balance!

It would be interesting to see if Mike-In-Orange has had his Cruiser smogged with Stage 1. I think smogging is only required every other year in California.

Since "S1" came on the market about 18 months ago I have not read or heard of a single instance where a PT Cruiser failed emissions testing, including in states like California, that have some tough standards. However, would recommend you keep your stock PCM just in case you need to put in back into operation at some later date. IMHO, had DC taken the additional time and spent the money to get "S1" CARB certified there would have not been concerns and many more people would have purchased this fine performance upgrade.

Here in my local we're not required to have emmissions testing until 2 years have past for new cars. I think that the few '03 and '04 GTs with Stage 1 are only just beginning to be tested.
I'm not sure what kind of load or RPM the cars are tested at. The tests that I have observed seemed to be done in neutral gear at various RPMs.
It doesn't seem to me that Stage 1 will make much of a change at the lower end of the RPM and/or power range where the testing is taking place. Having your engine in good tune should get you through the test.

Exept if the emissions testing picks up from the OBII that certain procedures have been modified. My understanding is that whatever is done to the PCM under stage 1 is not eligible for a CARB exemption and DC would have to retest the engine in its entirety. All that CARB requires of a manufacturer of an engine series is to certify that the modifications did not effect emissions or their warranty in an unfavorable manner. Aparetnly DC could or would not do this!!

Where I live, we have to "sniff" the car every year. I did it four weeks ago with all the goodies and it passed well bellow the limits. I do have a catalitic converter in it.

Mods in the car when I tested it in Jan 17 2005:
Stage 1
AMX turbo up pipe with K&N drop in filter.
Two springs on the Wastegate arm
BTG Single Exhaust system
PCV oil catch can
Mopar Waste Gate plate
New factory spark plugs

After the car passed the sniffer test, the inspector wanted to hear the BOV in operation.
Once he gave me the certificate of compliance, he asked me if I could floor it when I was leaving because he coudn't belive that the car had enough torque to spin the tires.... Guess he didn't knew much about the car... I tought him[8)]

Great to hear that you passed. Does the NY test just sniff the exhaust (which I would certainly think would pass) or does it read the OBDII parameters (which may be a problem depending on which parameters they check)?
