I had a very similar problem this past weekend. I took a trip down to Deleware and i was driving in slow traffic...next thing I know I heard the chime and then noticed the temperature gauge was at H in the red. I had pulled over and turned the car off and opened the hood. Let it sit for a while and then drove back to the hotel fine. I had noticed on my way down to Deleware from NY that when i was in slow traffic the temp would go up but a little and fluctuate(noy up to the red but higher then usual) but when i was cruising at 65-70mph the temp remained about half on the gauge. I ended up adding some water to my radiator before driving home and I drove home with the windows open and the a/c off. I havent brought it to the dealer yet to have it checked out.. i thought maybe my coolant was just low because I havent had any other problems....I never thought that the fan may actually be the issue. Thanks for the heads up and I will let you know how it goes.

Cruisrman,
Simple test even when cold. Turn the engine on and switch on the air-conditioning...the fan should come on to the high speed. If it doesn't, well, what can I say. I could probably do the whole job in about an hour or so now that I've done it once. There's still a chance it might be the fan fuse (No #5 40A in the fuse box in the engine compartment) or one of the 2 relays in that same fuse box. I don't know how to check the relays, I think that's best left up to the dealer with a special scan tool that can make the relays turn on and off. If the fan isn't running with the air-cond on, there's one more thing to try. Below is a picture from under the car at the bottom of the fan. The electronic clip with the orange tab is the power to the fan. Unhook that clip (orange tab pushes to one side before pulling clip apart) and put 12V to either side of the three prong clip. The center prong is for the ground. If the fan doesn't come on when you have direct power to it, it's burnt out. ![]()

Have your friendly tech at the local Chrysler dealer put a new thermostat in they as were installed from the factory "cocked",apparently the thermostat wont open or close and cause the sensor to go bad as well, there is a recall for this....

Gah,
I have been having the same problem. I am dying of heat and humidity where I live at, so I must have the A/C on. Rolling down the windows sux... When the A/C is blasting, I give it about 20 minutes in town and it starts to overheat. I had a problem a while back with one of those chips screwin up so I replaced it and I keep a spare or two in my car now just in case. Now this is a totally different problem. I checked to see if the fan runs as it should with A/C and at mid temp and it runs fine... maybe a circulating problem? Coolant and water are where they should be. BLEH summer. And the sky just finished peeing on my town, so humidity is killer tomorrow again! [:I] |
