Here's a really stupid question. I haven't changed any spark plug since my 88 Honda, a long time ago. I opened up my Cruiser to change the plug yesterday and found that the connectors don't just pop off. In fact the rubber just tore. Is there some magical way to cxtract the wire from the plug that I should know about, or are they just stuck because of age?

Welcome.
Don't know how many miles, but in any case, you should replace them - not only because the rubber tore, but because stock don't last. I suggest Crane wires at RaceAndStreet.Com. I twist the plug wires side-to-side before pulling up to "crack" them. When you change plugs/wires, suggest - anti-seize lubricant - put a small bit on the spark plug threads to keep them from corroding to the head, and "Dielectric grease" - put a bit on the plug ceramic, and a lot around the outside "boot" of the plug wire that sticks into the head - that'll prevent future problems like you had.
