I was having a discussion with one of my friends about engine swaps and it got me thinking,
1: Is it possible to do an engine swap with a pt for a more powerfull enigen?
2: Which engines would fit?
3: How much would something like that cost?
4: Has any one here done it?
I really would like to know the answers to these questions, if you can help please do.....Thanx
Why would you look into swapping in a whole different drivetrain? The 2.4 can be built up to hold massive amounts of power!

this is a regular topic. Seems that someone who is not versed in all the mechanics involved asks if a more powerful motor can be bolted in. Here is the long answer. 1. Front Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicles are much more space-specfic as to what will fit. Not impossible, but harder. 2. FWD cars do have limits to how much power can be applied. Many feel that 250-300 HP is the limit. I'm sure some will disagree, but unless you treat the chassis and driveline components to a full system analysis, this should be considered the maximum allowed. 3. There must be a cost/benefit met. If it costs more than the car is worth to double the horsepower, you could buy a car that already has that much power. 4. If this is what you want, you should start with the highest HP factory combo. This is so you have the best components to start (brakes, axles, suspension, etc.). 5. as stated, there are kits available to increase power of the stock drivetrain past almost any engine that you could swap. This would be easier, cheaper and proven. You could concentrate on tuning the combo instead of engineering motor mounts, driveline angles, servicing, and connecting all the support systems. Thes are the reasons that when a company that does this type of work wants to swap in something more than these limiting factors, they usually end up doing a complete chassis and going with a V8 RWD or a tube chassis FWD that is not streetable.

im dreaming to one day do a mitsubishi 4g63T turbo awd swap from a 91 talon tsi completely built into a 2.5 liter with around 500 hp and 490 ft lbs of torque.
Dan
Why a 91? If you are to do a swap like that atleast go with a EVOVIII drivetrain. 1st gen dsms are.....old.

To add to the conversation

HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE? With money anything is possible. Doing an engine swap, will without a doubt be expensive, so you might as well pick something with GOBS of power. Like either a BBChevy or stay true to Mopar with a BBChrysler & go RWD.
Anything else & staying FWD is a waste of cash. For the cost, you could buy a new HEMI charger & be done.

Yeah thanx for the help i guess... i was just thinking in theory i wasnt planing on doing it...notice how i said that i was talking to one of my friends about it..never said i was going to do it...ok i am most likely going to go with a hahn turbo and some engine beefing parts. One more thing, how fas of a quarter mile can a pt with 300( which is what i hear max is)hp run.

check out dragtimes.com

As for the 300HP pt question..on average you can look at a 14.2-14.5 realistically.
You can also use this as a base for est times

a 91 6 bolt fly wheel would be cheap about 3 grand for a built motor as you can get a car for around 2 sell the shell for 1500 and have cash to pur into it
have a bored and sleeved 2.5 liter from the normal 2 liter and have massive turbo posibilities .

they might be old but tried and true with the new head gaskets they make for them.

Lets face it even at 300 Horsepower you would be hard pressed to get a PT much lower than mid 13 second quarter mile and you would have a car that was barely streetable. Besides you would still get beat by Corvettes and such. My wife didn't want another PT so we bought a Honda V 6 Coupe. It has a 245 horsepower V 6 and it hauls butt. It's smooth as glass and gets over 30 mpg and handles like a Porsche. Lets face it the PT is a great looking car but just isn't a performance car and unless they offer a V8 it never will be. My idea of performance is a car that slams you back into the seat and the tires are going up in smoke.

My friend's '03 GT is pretty modded out. He dynoed 250 hp at the wheels which puts him over 300 at the crank. This was on a Mustang dyno. On a Dynojet you can pretty much add 20% to those numbers. He turned a 13.63 in the 1/4 this past summer. People at the track are always asking how he got a PT to go that fast. The GT is very streetable. He can use it for an every day driver or take it to the track and run with DR's. His next round of mods is better axles, clutch and a bigger turbo.

Concur,

If you want to go fast with the Chry 2.4L turbo you need to get a SRT4. The PT just isn't a 1/4 mile car. It is classified as a SUV & aerodynamically built like one.
You need massive torque to get them up to speed & torque requires cubic inches.

Mother's (the wax people) put a Chrysler 3.8 V6 from the van in one. The car is still FWD. Was told that it was not that hard of a job. They used a 5-speed so the code for the PCM had to be custom writen.
