Ok about the fuel filter on an 06 PT Cruiser, if it's inside the gas tank do I have to take it to a mechanic shop to get it replaced? Also I'm being told to replace it every 30K, is that right? Sorry I'm not familiar w/these things and unfortunately don't have anyone to help me with it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Or you could email me @ Blonde32girl@aol.com. Thanks.

Replacing the fuel filter involves raising the car, dropping the tank, pulling out the pump assembly. then, putting it all back together again. Probably you don't need a master mechanic to do it, but since you're dealing with fuel, you would sure want someone who knew what hes doing. Carey is right, don't run low on gas all the time, ithe gas helps keep the pump cool. srg |

There are many sites online which sell just the fuel filter (without the pump). Does this mean that you can replace the filter without replacing the pump. Has anyone on this list actually replaced a fuel filter without replacing the pump?
My '01 Cruiser with 73k miles is hesitating when I step on the gas hard and I think the filter needs to be replaced, but I'd rather not replace the pump at ~$300. Thanks... |

My Cruiser only has 12K on her, however, I have a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 that has 132K miles on her and I have never replaced the fuel pump or the filter and all is well. First time I took it in for a tune up, mechanic said that the filter was not a serviceable part unless the pump is replaced.
Hope this helps........Rick |

Fuel is much cleaner these days than it was, say, 30 years ago. Most pumps now have filters on the filler hoses. Also fues systems on our vehicles are now closed and not vented to the outside. So your not going to get the dirt in your fuel system like you would have in years past. That's my take on fuel systems now days.
