Default Transmission issue...

I have an 03 PT Limited with almost 59K miles on the car. I notice when I'm on the highway driving from 50-70mph I hear this weird whirring noise. (It's easier to hear at 50-60 of course.) When I step on the gas and the trans (auto) is in lockup (where the rpm is below 2500 or so), this whirring noise happens when I step on the gas. I'm assuming it's the transmission.

I took the car to the dealer, and they said a transmission range sensor was bad to the tune of $180. It was replaced, and I also had it flushed at 30 and 60K like the book says. The noise is still there. I'm going to take the car back to the dealer next week probably, but I was wondering if anyone has had the problem I did.

Thanks! [8)]

My 02's tranny went out at 47K miles, no indication of any problem before that. Tranny maintainance was done at 30K. It was rebuilt (under warranty) with all new parts, but just didn't "feel" right after that.

Got rid of it and bought a 06, and never looked back.

I'm taking the car back to the dealer on Friday and test driving it with them so we can agree on the noise. They are going to fix the car correctly or else I'm going to call my lawyer again and that will be that.

As a sidebar, the dealer told me they wouldn't charge a checkout charge if they found another problem directly realated to the sensor already replaced. I am curious what the trans range sensor does anyway, I've never heard of it before now.

Actually, I've read that there's a pin in the auto that could work loose, and when it does, it eats the tranny real quickly. Supposedly, this pin was redesigned so it won't work loose as readily, I think in '05 trannys on......
Still problems with clutch packs leaking/failing.

That's what they said last weekend, it was failing some sort of clutch test. They're replacing the entire transmission under the 7/70 warranty, $100 deductible. They have the car right now, should be done Friday or Saturday they said. The new tranny will also be covered for 3 years/36,000 miles.

I'm very disconcerted to have to replace a tranny at 58K miles, but I'm glad of the powertrain warranty and the 3/36 on the replacement. Since I am upside down by about $6k right now (yes, even with 0% financing!), I don't really have a choice.

The PT is a fun car, but it will be my last American car ever. I think I'd rather crawl through broken glass then go through the headaches that I've had, with American cars in general and Chrysler in particular. [xx(]
