Default Question

Ok I heard about someone with an auto, down shifting into 3 while passing instead of letting the tranny do the work in D. Is this a good thing?

Well have heard that some others do drive it this way besides my local couple here. Have tried to drive mine in the similar fashion, it does seems to make a difference when and if you need to pass someone. I have even noticed it shifts a slight bit better in D after attempting this, its like the tranny learned I liked it to shift down earlier to pass the second time around. I had some fun last night on the way home, ok.

But your right, I wouldn't do this as a habit only if you felt like you needed it in a lower gear to get up and go.

Downshifting like that doesn't hurt the transmission? I mean of course going a reasonable speed in 4th (not maxing-speed out then trying to downshift).

Seems to me, if you're passing and punch the gas, if the speed is right, the tranny will automatically downshift - if it doesn't, you may be going too fast for it to be a wise thing to do.[:I]

No I mean at about 40-60 range of speed when doing this, you hit about 4500 RPM at about 65 or so, if I remember right, so not a good idea to go any faster then that.

Your right Don, it does downshift but it's an alfull jerk and burst of power that you get and that can't be good for the tranny. If I'm on a long stretch and know I'm going to pass and the PT isn't already up in the "power band", I'll ease it into 3rd so the revs come up and when it's time to pass I'll stomp on it and squeese whatever power is left in 3rd and shift it into overdrive when I reach redline.
