Anyone have this problem? I have a 2002 PT limited edition. I put the key in the ignition but it won't turn. I have an automatic, so I try to move the gear shift -- no luck. Eventually I can get it to start. I have 2 keys -- tried them both -- still the same problem. Any ideas before I take it to the dealer?
Thanks, Karen |

Hi Bob, Tried that too, In fact I tried kicking it but that did not work either
. What is even stranger is that eventually I get it to turn it may take ten minutes. Thanks for the tip. |

There's a possibility that the tumblers in the ignition swith have worn out...I've got a company van with 2XX,XXX miles on it that does the same thing...ya gotta kinda wiggle the key around a bit to get it to turn

Make sure you don't have a lot of well... crap on your keychain making it heavy. Mopars do not have the best ignition switches and having a heavy chain will shorten the life of it prematurely.

Fodder is correct.
I change a lot of ignition switches. Most always, there's a lot of junk on the keychain. The PT ignition switch isn't tough to replace. Of those with 5lbs of crap on their keychain, a majority took some kind of physics classes. When I ask them to imagine the pressure on the switch tumblers with the fulcrum at the end of the key...... they just give a blank stare. With just 8oz hanging down 3 inches, the pressure on a contact point of .125 sq/in inserted 1 inch past the fulcrum, is an incredible ammount of force. Then you make the weight swing and bounce over bumpy roads .... can you inmagine what that key is doing inside the switch? Usually, a few hundred dollars for a new switch keyed to their car and replaced, will help educate them on the dangers of large keyrings. |
