I've read other posts here about removing the Air Box silencer, (the white hollow tube inside the top of the air box). I removed mine, and to be honest, I don't notice any difference on the way the car sounds. For those who have stated it "sounds better", how does it sound better? Is it louder when you are driving fast with all the windows down? It doesn't seem any loader to me in idle, or when I rev the engine while in park. Also, I don't see how this hollow white plastic tube could even be a silencer. If there were some material inside the tube to muffle sound, maybe. But a hollow tube? It seems more likely to me from my own observation that the tube is there to devert air flow into the intake from the air box. That would explain the bent angle of the tube. Why would a silencer need to be bent at a slight angle? I could be wrong since so many are claiming it to be a silencer, but where did you find out that is its purpose? Is that what Chrysler claims its function is?
Thanks. |

It's been a while since I removed mine, but if I remember, I didn't hear the whoooosh when I let off the accelerator like I do. Can't say I'm really impressed, but then again, it's one more restrictor between the airbox and the turbo.

You seem to be looking for confirmation that the white plastic venturi tube and the airbox design is indeed a Helmholtz Resonator. It's engineered to absorb air resonance and reduce sound levels.
The white tube creates a low pressure venturi effect, similar to the function of a carburetor throat. http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/Helmholtz.html http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/...orabsorber.php |

Remove that black tube on the side of the airbox and you'll definitely notice some sound and a bit more performance then.

I disagree with chromedcruiser on removing the intake for the air box, sure you might get more sound but performance might actually be decreased. The tube is there to take air from the fender well and not the engine bay, by removing it you are allowing the intake to suck in that engine bay hot air thus decreasing performance. Sound yes I assume it is slightly more aggressive but performance gains, maybe the opposite.

I'm gonna have to disagree with ya. I did notice more gains from removing the black silencer. You're greatly increasing the ability of the intake to pull in more air by removing the black pipe, cool air is still going to make it into the airbox, it's just going to be mixed with a bit of the warm air from the engine bay. Instead of funneling just a bit of cool air, you're pulling in a larger amount of warm air. What may be a better way is to cut a larger hole into the intake-box and use a 90 or 45 degree piece of 3-4" PVC to direct air in, that would give the best of both worlds.

The gain you noticed was from your butt dyno and butt dyno's are all in the head. I agree with Hotrod. Sucking hot engine air is not a good thing. On a dyno a PT GT lost a bunch of torque with an open intake sucking hot engine air. A larger elbow for more cold air intake isn't really going to help a computer controlled n/a PT. You'll increase the noise factor but not performance.
