Default Thinking of a Flowmaster Muffler

I own a 01' Pt Cruiser, and as much as I love my little car, I'd like to add a few things to make it a bit more fun to drive. My other two toys have a nice exhaust note to them, but my Cruiser is so quiet.

First off, I do not want my car to sound like some Honda or Mitsubishi with a giant glass-pack hanging off its rear. Secondly, I do want a fake "dual-exhaust" set up which is nothing more then a single exhaust set up with two tail pipes hanging off the rear.

I like how the Flowmasters sound on my other car, and they're the dealta's so there isn't much of a interior drone although the car can be heard from across the neighborhood. Granted though, this car also has a V8, a big cam, and true dual exhaust; headers, two mufflers, two seperate pipes, etc. I'm afraid the same muffler, with my little 4-banger, isn't going to sound right.

I don't want anything super loud, but I do want to be able to hear it while driving. I know any performance gain will be hardly nothing, and the extra 2hp or so it might give me isn't going to bring my car from very-slow to kind-of-slow, so I don't really car about that. I noticed Flowmaster has a muffler made for smaller engines and was wondering if anybody has tried that. I'm not going to waste my money on any cat-back system either; the car already came with exahust piping from the factory, and a bigger diameter isn't going to make my car fast.

I've read on here where people have said "Yeah, my flomasters sound great!!!", but I need more info. What kind of flowmaster is it, how bad is the drone, does it get louder the higher you rev it?? Is it a deep tone?? Deep for a 4banger?? etc. Thanks in advance!!!

Flowmaster offers two cat-back systems, single exhaust (part # 17326) and dual exhaust (part # 17327). Can see pictures of it at my website:

If you are talking about just replacing the muffler with a Flowmaster one, you would have to work with your local muffler shop to find a Flowmaster with approx the same dimensions. Some have done this and were happy with the sound/results. Believe it was a 50 Series Delta Flow Muffler, but check around the various PT forums and do a search for the Flowmaster model they used.

A few have used the Flowmaster Hushpower II Audi TT Muffler on their PT's.

Ansa sounds pretty sweet:

I've got a 40 series delta flow on mine. $136 installed with an SS tip at the local muffler shop. At idle it has a nice deep rumble that you can't really hear when sitting in the car. Through acceleration it has a nice tone to it, NOT ricer sounding. As you move through the RPM's you begin to hear more and more engine noise... I'd say past 3500 and you really mostly hear intake. At about 3000 RPMs it's got a slight drone, but turn the radio on and it's gone. When you let off the accelerator you get that nice deep "bubbly" sound.

So does the muffler actually get quiter as you accelerate to the higher RPM's?? I'd like something that has kind of a nice bite of growl to it if I floor the vehicle and rev it to redline, not soemthing that gets smoother. I don't have a intake, I might get one, but they're pretty much pointless so I might just save my money.

And what exactly do you mean by rumble at idle?? You can hear my other car idiling a few cars away from it at a stoplight with the windows up. Thats what I call a "rumble" at idle Although I don't expect the Cruiser to do anything like that.

Is there any way you can post a soundclip of you Cruiser??

It's got some bite to it. You know something's there, but it's not a VTEC with a coffee can on the back. It's deeper than most four bangers you hear.

By rumble at idle, it's got some nice lop in it, it's deep.
I can't get a sound clip on here anytime soon, but if you go to PTtuning.com, listen to their dual exhaust on a supercharged PT, that's pretty damn close. The Flowmasters are probably a little deeper.

I had a Flowmaster series 40 duel put on my cruiser. The series 50 was too long to fit. It produced a wonderful low rumble that was great however, it also produced a drone that would drive you nuts at just about any cruising speed. Back to the shop and 15minutes later with a resonator just ahead of the Flowmaster I have the sound I wanted. A great idle sound, noise on gentle acceleration, much better acceleration with my turbo lite, and either the exhaust or just turning 8,000 miles at the same time I can not say; but my mileage went from an average of 21.6 to 24.9. I love the Flowmaster and highly recommend one. I used the oval chrome tip and it looks as great as it sounds. [|)]

Best complement came from a Mustang club I joined at a dyno a few weeks ago when they all said it did not sound "ricey" and not all what they expected. They approved of the sound that came from the back end of my wonderful PT.

Default Re: Thinking of a Flowmaster Muffler

I finally got tired of the noise from my prior Aftermarket Exhaust and switched to the Flowmaster kit (single exhaust part # 17326).

The Drone is GONE. GONE GONE GONE!

Now a nice little low-pitched sound at idle, a good Grunt when I get on it at low revs, which stays nice and 'throaty' (and a bit loud) into high revs.

Cruising is nice... a nice grown-up sound.

And when I back off the gas, a Wonderful burble.

I should have done this YEARS ago.

Of course now I am aware of a bunch of squeaks and clunks that I had not noticed before.... some might be exhaust components that need some adjustment... but others have probably been happening for years but it was too loud to hear them.
