The shop that says CA requirement is Monro Muffler, they just quoted my dad a price of 1500 to do it. They are telling him that it needs to be California equipment becuase the car is progrmaed to California requirements. I dont belive this but if someone could shed some light on it.
Thanks for all the help

I call BS. Go to a different shop. Aftermarket cat is only around $70 and should take 30 minutes to replace. So that makes a Calif cat $1450? [xx(]

Ignore what your mechanic told you, it's a bunch of jack up the price mumbo jumbo. It's like when you call Sears to fix a simple part in your frige, they try to sell you the manufacturers most expensive part so that they make a margin off the price off the part, when any frige fixer guy can replace the broken part with any old sensor. Once you get past the o2 sensor on the o2 housing the PT's PCU does nothing else to measure exhaust. Since all you need to replace is the flex pipe on your free to replace those parts with whatever you want. Just call a few local shops including the monroe shop. Tell them that you have an 01 PT and you have a new flex pipe and a replacement cat and you want them to replace the old parts with the new parts, the shop that gives you the best price, that's the one you go to. Replacing a catalytic converter is such a simple operation, if you know how to use a hacksaw and have access to a welder then you could even do it yourself and have your dad pay you the $1,500.

In NY I've had good experiences with the Meineke chain, they have come up with inexpensive solutions for exhaust problems.

You might give them a try.
