Default Catalytic Converter Question

My dad has my 2001 PT Limited, it needs a new catalytic converter, The exhuast shop told him it has to be califonia emmisions, the problem is Im doing an online search and the only cats i can find say except califonia models. Anyone know of a site or place that i can find one for him. Also we live in NY so im not sure why we need a california emmisions cat.

thanks

Living in NY, there shouldn't be a problem putting on a stock or performance CAT. Calif does has stricter regulations....but your 3,000 miles from Calif. I'd find another shop.

How many miles? If under 80K its still covered by the emisions warranty, check your owners manual. Mine was done @ 64K for free on my 02.

Get him a high flow Magnaflow Cat, will run you around 70 bucks, any cat will do for that matter. But if you want to sneak a performance part past your dad and make your PT run faster, get a Magna Flow.

Any of these sites will have what your looking for. Flex pipe, cat, etc. Not sure what size pipes an 01 has, but I think they are 2.25 inch diameter.

NY, like a few other 'blue' states has adopted CA emissions specs.

But thats only for new car equipment.

All you have to really worry about is passing the emissions tailpipe test, so any working Cat will do.

And now for the trick question: How much do you trust your mechanic?
(Or was this your only visit to the exhaust shop?)

You might want a second opinion, from a mechanic you can trust, especially if you DO need a new cat, because a full-service shop will be better able to diagnose why the cat died.

Unless the cat rusted out or was physically damaged (as in running over a big rock) clogging or burning out may be due to an engine problem. IE: Burning oil, for example, will kill a cat.

Make sure the engine is healthy before putting on a new one...

engine is healthy, the cat is cracked from what i understand. My dad took the car fora second opinion and they said it was cracked also, along with the flex pipe. The second opinion was done by our mechanic not the exhuast shop so i trust it better.
Thanks for the help

The exhaust is 2.25".
