Default Alternator Belt Question

Recently the alternator belt on my '01 PT n/a decided it was going to shred into spaghetti - I have purchased the new belt, but when i went to attack the actual installation I found next to no room at all to work with inside the engine bay on that side. I tried to attack from the bottom with the car in the air and still hit a wall. I am stuck here for ideas and wondering if there is a special method to doing this or if I just gave up to easy. Any help on the above mentioned topic would be greatly appreciated, whether it is actual technical advice or a link to an outside source which details this information. Pretty much all the websites I foundwhen i googled this topic had to do with the turbo engine not mine.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

-Ed

The front of the engine is on the passenger side. Jack up the car, do or don't take off the front passenger wheel, take off the inner liner and the front of the engine will be in view to do a lot of your maintenance.

Having the power steering pump replaced under warranty. Mechanic did it without taking off the wheel.
