Has anyone experianced a popping noise coming from the rear of the car while braking to a stop? This developed on my 01 PT at 61k miles, I currently have 61,500 miles showing. I had the original brake pads replaced (rear disk brakes) because of this noise. No change. I took it to a 5 star dealer and they replaced the rear track bar, cleaned and lubed the rear calipers. No change. My 5 star delaer tells me it's the new aftermarket brake pads that are moving? I think this is beyond the dealers capabilities. Ideas?

The popping noise started before the brake job. This is what's so puzzling....

when does the noise happen?? while braking ?? accelerating ?? let us know

The noise happens when braking to a stop. Never when accelerating. I have tested various brake pedal pressures from firm to soft while stopping, the popping sound exists in either case.

Check the shock mounts and the sway bar mounts.

I took all your the suggestions to the next 5 star hopeful. They actually took me seriously. They had three different techs drive it and all concluded the noise was in the rear of the car. Then they evaluated the problem by systematically disconnecting the rear shocks, then rear sway bar, no change. Then they got creative. The last hunch was the e-brake; They decided to remove the rotors and turn them to make sure they were perpendicular to the "inner e-brake" mechanism. The theory was a brake pressure / binding issue within the e-brake. For good measure they also swapped the rear pads, left to right, right to left side. I am not sure which actually solved the problem but the noise is gone. At least I now have a responsible dealer to go too....
