Default Noisy Steering

Hello,

I am new to the site and am hoping someone has had previous similar
experience and can help me understand a peculiarity(?) with our 2001 PT
(Touring),

The steering whines and is quite noisy, has been this way for a few years.
We have had it in to the Chrysler dealer where we purchased it about four
times, and they have been able to only quiet the problem for a short time.
The vehicle was under warranty when first addressed for this problem.

It makes the most noise when turning (both right and left), and is a steady,
not intermittent, whine. The vehicle now has 65000K on it, and has continued
to function, but this sounds like a major repair down the road.

My wife loves her car; but we have considered trading it for another for
fear this is a chronic problem for which there seems to be no "fix."
Any suggestions or insights?

Thanks...

Welcome to the Forum!!!

How have they attempted to fix the noise? Did they replace the PS pump? You'll have to give some of the fixes they tried for us to be able to give you some ideas. How long have the fixes lasted, 1 week, 6 months?

Hello:

Thanks for the welcome...

We were never given any info as to what they "tried," as it was worked on
under warranty conditions and actually never completely resolved. I'd like
to be more helpful, but we have no paperwork on what the dealership did
to try to fix the car.

Are you thinking perhaps the power steering pump? It does sound like it might
be a related issue, at the least, but I wonder how they might have missed it,
unless what they attempted was at minimal cost to them.

Thanks again.

Yes, I do think it is the pump, possibly the bearing. You mentioned that this has been going on "for years". How is it you have never received any paperwork or don't they offer it to you. I have every piece of paper for all work done on my car, warranty or not. You should be able to go to any dealer, give them your
VIN # and they can find it. Ask for a printout of what has been done to your car. Here in the States there is a "Lemon Law" that basically allows you to demand a correction or after (I think 3 tries) they replace your car.

Demand the paperwork!!!
