From what I've heard, the performance "chips" out now don't actually reprogram your engine thru the computer but use their own device to reset engine controls. They can also be wiped out and not be usable again if taken to a dealer and your computer is flashed. The other forum has a way of actually reprogramming the PT computer for optimum performance.

Yes a lot of people use chips on their car. I have a Stage II chip in my Vette, but Chrysler has been exceptionally secretive about their programming and until now (if it's true) no one has been able to break the code.

I'm in no way endorsing the below product. Buy at your own risk. CJM = CREWZIN

Well, I've been reading up on the new SCT reprogrammed computer. It's only for the 2004 and up PT Cruiser Turbo and Non-turbo. Supposedly around 37 whp and 77 ft lbs torque for about $600 ($500 if a group buy). Here's some words from the person pushing it:

"More info on it here: SCT Dodge / Chrysler Custom Tuning Products

No you don't have to send me your PCM! I program a hand-held tuning device called the "XCal 2", I send it to you, you plug the XCal 2 into your ODBII port and follow the on-screen instructions to flash your own PCM! The XCal 2 saves your stock configuration so you can always flash back to stock. In fact you have to flash back to stock before it will let you use it on another vehicle. It locks to your VIN until you flash back to stock.

The XCal 2 holds up to 3 different tunes. It's internet updatable... you can connect it to your laptop or PC via a standard USB cable and download new tunes that I can e-mail to you to the device. You can even use it to read and clear codes when your CEL comes on, AND you can datalog with it!"

....and here's the thread that talks about the whole project:

PTCrew.com - Learn it or Burn it.

Understand that's 37 whp and 77 ft lbs torque for a stock 265 hp SRT-4. Right now nobody knows what it will do for a stock na 150 hp PT. Got to wait for the first guinea pig to do it.

Those chips are garbage. I tried one and it did nothing but foul my plugs.

This is the only one I've heard anything good about:
Kenne Bell Optimizer II
It works by setting input to computer to change timing to use premium instead of regular fuel. It also reprograms automatic shift points.
It supposedly does what it says it does, according to posts I've read from people who tried it.
