Question Radiator cooling fan

I have a 2001 PT which has been over heating while idling with the air on. I have narrowed it down to the radiator cooling fan. Has anyone replaced one? It appears you have to remove the bottom radiator hose and take it out the bottom. Any ideas?

NO. The fan/housing (all in one) comes out from the top. Leave the bottom hose alone. 4 or 6 bolts on the fan housing, upper radiator hose (let some water out from the pet cock before taking off the top hose). Radiator support bar in front so the radiator can move forward giving you enough room to lift the fan housing out. Don't forget the electrical connection to the fan. From underneath, it's on the left side of the fan with a red slide lock.....see second picture. You have to buy the fan and housing together. Good prices on eBay if you can wait that long.

Thank you for the removal info. I had one apart last week and could not get that fan out. You have saved me a ton of time on my next try.

Your welcome. Never heard from the person who asked the original question. Hope he got his fan out without too much trouble.

each time you start the engine within 15-20 seconds you should hear the fan cycle on low then high then it will shut off. if you do not hear these diagnostics being run automatically than there is a problem. make it a habit to listen for them or test it yourself once a week.

Quick question, can the fan also be removed from below or does it only come out the top? Thanks

I removed it from the top....
too hard or impossible thru the bottom

Just did mine about a month ago..wasn't too hard..

first removed the grille. (four screws...lift up pull out.. )

then removed the radiator crossmember...just bungee it out of the way since the remote hatch opening is still attached.
also had to remove a little sensor that was bolted on the same bolt as the cross member..not sure what it is but could have been an airbag sensor.

unhooked the radiator hose...a lil fluid leaked..not too bad.

removed the six bolts holding the fan shroud * 2 top, 2 bottom, one on each side.

unhooked the electrical connection...this was a little tricky since it was stuck a bit...and honestly the hardest part of the install.....but eventualy slid the red tab to the side and was able to unhook.

pulled whole fan assembly out from top.

Now I had the option to replace the fan motor on my '05
not sure if you can on yours...

but it was easy..

removed a clip from the front center of the fan...undid three bolts from the back and was able to replace the motor.

Autozone gave me a price of 179 for the entire assembly and 109 for just the motor.

wasn't very hard at all..

just got to be careful and not use brute force. lots of plastic, and don't loose the clips that go with the bolts

good luck.

Unhappy Re: Radiator cooling fan

How can I tell if it is the fan or if it is the fan relays, or thermostat? My fan does not turn on at all, I'm not sure how long this has been going on actually because we recently had to replace the a/c compressor, which I believe only failed because of the fan not working. The car runs at normal temp while driving (even in town), and the a/c is cool. But as soon as I stop, the temp starts to rise and the a/c is blowing hot air. Thanks for any info. Replacing the a/c cost too much for me to take it in again, and just before that I had to have the cable between the interior fuse box and the fuse box in the engine bay replaced, so I need to figure this one out on my own.
