Default Mobil 1 oil loss, oil change recommendations

I'm about to get my GT's oil changed for the first time, and I was planning on changing to Mobil 1. I read on another site that folks switching to Mobil 1 have experienced oil loss (pretty severe, too, like a quart every 3k miles). Anyone else know about this? Should I go to 10W30? How about oil filter recommendations?

Thanks.

I have changed my oil 3 times, and it is now due a 4th change. Ever since 1500 miles have used Mobil 1 and have had no appreciable oil volume loss. I have been searching for the K&N oil filters but have not found them yet. The Oil pressure at startup is between 60 & 70 Psi until warmup, (then goes to 15-20 @ idle and 25-35 nmormal operating range) and there are some of the cheaper filters that will not stand up well to that startup pressure. Fortunately the MOPAR filter that the dealer has used up until now have worked fine and show no signs of malfunction or leaks. I still plan to go to the K&N filter when I find a supplier.

Gear_Head,

Have you tried K&G auto? I don't know if they stock it, but that's where I got my K&N drop-in air filter 610-359-1616. They're in Broomall, PA

I'm probably going to go with a Motorcraft FL1 filter or Purolator Premium Plus. I'd go with the Mobil 1 filter but the review page I read indicated some folks have had it spring leaks at high pressure. Anyone here hear of anyone who has had a problem with the Mobil 1 filter?

Also, should I stick with the 5w-30 as in the manuals? Is that what you all use?

The manual says you should use 5w-30 if you drive in temperatures that don't exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If temps. get above 100 degrees then you should use 10w-30.

Considering you are in NH, I would say go with the 5w-30. You will get less friction which will give you more HP.

No problems to report with any of the Mobil 1 filters I have used so far. K&N and Purolator PureOne are the other filters I have used.

1 quart of oil per 3000 miles is not really considered excessive oil usage. I check my oil about every weekend and add as needed. I run my engine pretty hard and when you run at higher RPM's you will get more "blow-by" in addition to the oil that is ingested through the PCV valve and the vent on the valve cover to the air cleaner. I run syth oil in my PT. After owning several turbo cars and having a bad experience running dino oil in the 1st one many years ago, I will only use syth on turbo cars now.

Like others have mentioned, the 10W30 would be a good choice in higher temps, and in mild winter climates.

The GT will consume more oil than you would like. One easy way to slow down the oil loss would be to vent the PCV filter to atmosphere through a small filter. This would take it off the air box, where the oil can be sucked into the airbox filter from the head. By taking it off the airbox and putting a filter on the line, the vacuum created by the airbox is eliminated, and the PCV system can "breathe" normally.

Also, the switch to synthetic oil may slow down the oil loss as well.
