Default PT - Whining from front end

I have a new whining noise from the front end.

Very noticeable above 20mph, most noticeable when slowing down
from 40mph to 20mph. Above 50mph, to much road noise to really hear the whine.

Whine:

- occurs when Driving straight down the road.

- is in time with tire spinning ( rotation) .

- When the rolling in neutral, whining stays in time with tire rotation.
( This is a 2003, PT Limited, with an automatic)

- Does not change tone or pitch while going around corners.

- revving the engine while in neutral does not change the whine.

- 120k miles on vehicle.

- New tires on car, Whine was present before new tires.
(thought it could have been the tires, replaced tires because they needed to be replaced anyway. I just bought a new set)

Any ideas on what this might be?

Thanks
Dave

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.

I believe you are correct.

The mechanic called at the end of the day to say the driver's
side wheel bearing(s) needed to be replaced. $250.00

Now a follow up.....

The mechanic said that he was only going to replace the driver's
side bearing(s).

Should both sides be replaced at the same time? ( I assume another $250.00)

Or

Can I wait on the passenger side until it needs replacing in the future?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Don't believe you have to do both sides but at least have the mechanic check the other side out for signs of trouble.

Not a bad idea to both at once.... The other one WILL go bad. Might as well get it done now rather than being out a car again in six months.... I would get both done.
