My 2.4 stopped any suggestions ??

I was driving this evening about 45 mph when I noticed what sounded like a spark knock. The car (2001 PT ) started losing power. In a few more seconds I noticed that the oil light had flashed on and the car shut down. I put it in neutral and coasted to a stop. I opened the hood and smelled oil and opened the cap and it smoked bad. The dipstick shows full and clean oil. Here is what I do know. It has 141,000 in the engine , I am not sure if the timing belt has ever been replaced. I have pulled the radiator and the timing cover the belt looks to be in tact. I did seem what looked like a head gasket leak under the cam sensor. The motor will not start , I hear the starter engage but it wont kick over. One time it almost tried but sounds like a squeal ? Have I just bought a motor or is this one of those PT Cruiser things I may never understand?

When my cam sensor signal died, it did exactly what yours has done but it wasn't smoking. Did the engine light come on? If it did, the computer has a code that will help tell us/you what the problem might be. To find the fault code, turn the key on/off three times without actually starting the engine. at the 3rd turn leave the key pointing towards the windshield and if there's any fault codes it will show up in the middle dial like P0432 or if there's no codes it will say "done". Turn the key on/off fast and all 3 turns within 5 seconds.
