I understand this code is a sensor relating to the catalytic converter. How easy or hard is this to change out? Any special tools needed and how much does the part cost? My local dealership said it can cost anywhere from 80 to over 175 depending on the sensor, and autozone said it costs about 25 each. Big difference in price, so any info would be helpful.

Your code if for the downstream oxygen sensor which is located on the left side of the catalytic converter. Trace the electrical lead from the sensor to the electrical connector and disconnect it. Unscrew the sensor with a suitable wrench (it's not necessary to use a special 02 sensor socket.
Forget the dealer and either do it yourself or ask around for a trusted mechanic.

Please excuse bringing up an old thread. Since this code has been addressed
before, I didn't see the need to start a new one. My 05 Touring has thrown this code. I was going to replace the O2 sensor, but Autozone gave me a list of possible causes which include other possibilities as well. Should I start with replacing the sensor? I'd like to avoid going to a mechanic if it's a simple fix. |

First, I wouldn't put a whole lot of trust in your AutoZone parts counter guy. Second, shutterbug seems to think that re-tightening the gas cap took are of his code so you might as well try that. Make sure it clicks 3 times when tightening it. Then it might take a day to go away as the computer has to recognize that everything is OK before turning the engine light off. if it doesn't go away, yea, I'd start with the downsteam 02 sensor next to the CAT.

THATS why this forum is a great resource. Thanks Crewzin. I did check the
cap, but haven't driven it much since. As an FYI, here's the list that was in Autozone's system. 1 Oxygen sensor defective 2 Fuel system running very rich or lean 3 Engine misfire condition (I've not noticed anything) 4 Fuel pressure very high or low - fuel pump or pressure regulator |
