I have read other comments saying the same thing. Also may have made a mistake of using Bosch +4 plugs. I only thought the coil might be helpful because I am raising the compression, but you Turbo guys have already figured that out a long time ago because at full boost, you have some incredible compresion ratios yourself.

Funny, I am doing thousands of dollars worth of work, just to catch up with what a turbo guy can do with a simple boost controller :-)

Yeah, but your car is going to be special. A NA that can kick butt. Keep up the good work.

Ported and shaved Heads + Crane 12's are installed on the car now. We shaved them .020, bringing the compression up a full point we think. I believe I can feel the difference in the seat of my pants, but want to get it to the dyno first. The new lake pipes are LOUD! I am dumping the header into a Thrush glasspack then splitting it out the sides in front of each rear tire. For a NA, it is starting to get pretty mean. More pics of the car to come soon.

More pics coming soon. Trying to get everyting completed so I can take to the Dyno.

Check out the working lake pipes. Not too loud, 2.5 pipes thru a glasspack then out both sides.

Thumbs up Re: Porting na head

Nice work on deciding to machine in your power rather than simply bolt it on. I've already thought about porting and polishing my heads on my N/A 2003.

What was your bill from the machine shop for the work? How many hours do you think you have invested in tear-down/rebuild?

Glad to hear she's revving more freely these days!

Tom

Deathstar went the correct route. No such thing as bolt on power for the na PT. Really looking forward to his dyno runs.

The porting cost me $400, we removed about a 1/16 t0 3/32 around the intake ports to match the intake runners and about 1/16 around the exhuast. The rest of the porting was pretty mild, taking no more than 1/16 off anywhere except deep inside the intake ports. They got dug out a little more than that.

Shaving the head probably did more than anything else bringing the compression up. With no turbo to force it up, that is our only choice. Nice thing about a NA is that it creates the power VERY quickly, no turbo lag, very nice for street use. The engine also revs much faster now, but ofcourse I can not make the top end power that a good turbo car can make. I'm using a 75hp NOS for that.

$400 is actually not too bad considering the work going into it. I'm assuming you didi the teardown/rebuild yourself..? How many hours (estimated?)

So if you're running higher compression now (you said something in the range of 10.5:1) you will probably have to run 89 or 91 octane minimum correct? Or have you continued to run 87 and not had detonation problems?

Sounds like the amount of head you removed was a pretty standard port job. I've been considering picking up a used head from a bone yard and having that done while my PT stays on the road.

I'm also curious about your cams from Crane:
What cam did you buy? (do you have a web link?)
What were the lift/duration numbers versus what the stock NA PT has?
I see (in your photos) that the PT pistons are Tir-angle topped with valve releifs. How did you know how much head to deck off without crashing the pistons into open valves?
How do you think your mileage has been affected with the new cams & porting?

Lots of questions I know, but since you've already been through what I was thinkning of doing, you're my template right now dude!

Thanks,

Tom

Did you get it to a dyno yet? I'm looking to order cams in the next couple days so I can make sure I have them for installing over July 4 holiday. Without seeing dyno numbers, I'm going to have to order 10's on Stockum's advice. If I see decent numbers with the 12's without NOS, I'd rather get 12's since if I go turbo later, they're more versatile in that application ..... hence their resale is better. It seems NOONE does dynos on thier NA Cruisers. I can't find anything on the net for NA Cruiser dyno results. A full graph with AFR would be awesome.
