2001 pt not start'in

well i was driving my car and all the sudden the tach when from 2k rmps to 3 and jumped around intil the car shut off.. the battry is good and i know a few weeks ago i had a miss fire on cyc 3 but that stoped happening but non the less not the same preformince... but what i did was chek to see if there was gas at the injectors and when i pull the cap off the end gas shot out.. but when i put starter stuff in to the intake the car started and ran even tho it back fird a few time when i gave it gas.. once i turned it off it did not come back on..any ideas? btw.. first post!!!!!!!!!

Most likely it's a cam or crank sensor problem. The cam sensors are pitiful and the wiring to the crank sensor has been known to come loose and drop down on the axle and wear through.
